Can Infections Hurt Baby?

Hey ladies!

I took the good advice of many of you (thanks so much!) and went to the doctor today to find out if what I?ve been experiencing is infection. Turns out, I have TWO kinds of infection! Yippee! Bacterial Vaginosis and a yeast infection. She gave me a prescription for the bacterial infection and recommended an over-the-counter for a yeast infection. My question is this: Do any of you know if these infections could be harming the baby? I thought I read somewhere that getting infections in pregnancy can mean an early labor down the road. Can anybody verify either of these things? Sometimes my doctor makes me feel a little rushed so I forgot to ask her today. Thanks, all!

Re: Can Infections Hurt Baby?

  • I had a doctor's appointment today and he said the bacteria they found in my urine last time was a little uncommon and that I will need to have a penicillin shot when I come in to deliver so I don't give anything to the baby. I've never heard that before, but I'll take my doctor's word lol.

  • Untreated infections can cause problems thats why its important to get treatment right away. As long as you take the meds & it clears up, you'll be fine. It can cause early labor if untreated.

  • If left untreated, BV can lead to PTL. Be sure to get this checked again and make sure it is gone at your next appt. But, don't worry about what it can do, just start your treatment so it doesn't.

Yeast can't do much. They usually don't treat it unless it is causing harsh symptoms but because they found it with your BV, your ph levels are off which is why they recommend getting that taken care of too.

  • Id call back and ask your doc just to be sure, dont let them rush you.  From what I understand, as long as the baby is sealed in your uterus, your infections cant hurt it, but when you start to go into labor that does open the baby up to infection.  Keep in mind, I am not a doctor, you are getting this info second-hand.  I would really call back and at least ask the nurse.

  • As far as yeast infections go, the only time they can be passed to your child is during childbirth.  I believe they call it thrush, which is a yeast infection of the mouth and throat.  Just take care of it now and don't worry.  Even if you have one during childbirth thrush is easily treated.
  • I had a YI not too long ago.  It was horrible and itchy and all around awful but sadly, incredibly common during pg.  From what I know, there is no reason to think the baby would be affected by them and if your doctor was concerned I'm sure she would have said something.
  • I think if you take care of it there isn't anything to worry about but if you let it go it maybe a different story.
  • BV can be very serious.  I have literally been taking antibiotics for a month trying to get rid of it.  Even now I am in a waiting game to see if it is truly gone.

BV can infect the amniotic fluid which will lead to preterm contractions. The infection hurts the baby by putting you in PTL. Pay attention to any severe cramp like contractions, and call your doctor and let them know if you are having them.  You also may want to look into taking a probiotic called BIOK.  I took this in addition to my antibiotics to help with recurring infections.  If you have a yeast infection this is probably a good idea anyways.  It has the same bacteria that yogurt has, just more of it.  You can find it in health food stores.

I also soaked in baking soda baths, which helped with the oh so stinky smell.   I also wore loose shorts to help everything breathe down there. BV can be caused by the pregnancy itself and stress.  So take it easy.

I hope this helps!  I have had a hell of a time with mine...and did have preterm contractions from it.  My body just couldn't get rid of it.  Good luck and I hope your infections go away fast!
