Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Rear mount bike seats for toddlers

What is the scoop with these things?  Are they unsafe?  I have the tow behind bike trailer but thought that I would get out and bike more if I could attach one of the baby bike seats on the back of my bike.  But I thought at one point I heard those were unsafe.  And our bike trailer is still sitting unused because it looks like a pain to hook up.

Also, if you do have teh rear mount bike seat, at what age did you start using it?  With Sam being 11 months, not sure if he is still too young for this.

Re: Rear mount bike seats for toddlers

  • We use the Bell Classic Bike Seat (about $35 from Walmart). We just make sure he wears a helmet at all times and he's perfectly fine. We started using it around 14 months because that's when the weather got nice but he would have been fine to use it at 11 months. He HATED the bike trailer. He couldn't see out, couldn't get good air circulation, the air he did get was mingled with dust from my tires.

  • Yes, get one! I think they're safer than the bike trailers because I think people see a person on the bike much more than something trailing behind, but that's my opinoin.

Yes, you need a helmet too but DS loves the bike. Only he doesn't like it when we stop at stoplights! He wants to go fast!

  • We don't have a rear-mount one, but we have the iBert, which is a front-mount one and DS LOVES it!  He also likes the bike trailer but he giggles the whole time he is in this seat.

and here is a PIP of DS in the seat:
