Anyone had an amnio late in pg?

So I'm measuring BIG!  And it's possible that we will be having and amnio to be sure he is ready to com eout early.  Has anyone had an amnio later in pg?  It will be either 36+ weeks.  I haven't ever had one and I'm nervous.  Please share your experience with me.  Thanks much!

Re: Anyone had an amnio late in pg?

  • I didn't have one late in pregnancy, I was only 17 weeks, but I can tell you about my experience. It went very well and was very easy. I think knowing in advance I would be having one helped me relax some too. The actual insertion of the needle was the worst part. My dr. didn't do anything to numb it, said there was no reason to, it would just be the top of the skin anyways that was numb. It felt like a cramp that lasted about 45 seconds. I watched on the ultrasound while they took the fluid which was neat. After they got the sample, they put a bandaid over it and had me drink some water. They did another ultrasound to check on the baby and had me drink more water. They did one more ultrasound before they let me leave and things were fine.

I was just told to take it easy for the rest of the day and if I had any leaking or bleeding to call and then head into the ER. I had some cramping off and on for the rest of the day but I took some tylenol and that made it stop. I just made sure to drink plenty of water and I was back to normal the next day. I haven't had any complications from it and it has been 10 weeks since it was done. Good luck!

  • my mom had multiple amnios with my little sister and brother at the end of her pregnancies (they are much much younger than me), because she could not go into labor (due to her uterus rupturing during labor with me)  and the day that the lungs were developed they came out.  Im sorry I don't know much about the procedure, but my mom had many many amnios at the end for each of them and she did fine :)

  • I haven't but my sister did back in February.  She is diabetic so they knew from the beginning that she would have a big baby.  I think when she was 36 weeks she was measuing at 42 weeks so they did an amnio to check lung development.  I don't want to scare you but she said it hurt pretty bad.  Her stomach was stretched to the max so I don't know if that had anything to do with it.  She got the results back the next day and everything looked good so she had a c-section the next day.  Her daughter weighed 11 lb 6 oz when she was born (very big baby!).  My sister and her daughter are both happy and healthy today.  Good luck!!
