Baby Names

I was so offened

So today DH and I went to the store to buy some yummy cherries, as we are checking out the cashier is doing the usual routine of questions.  When are you due, do you know if it is a boy or girl, and what is his name going to be?

Well LO's name is going to Octavian.  (Ovi for short)

The cashier looks at us and says, "WOW!"  that's it.

I know it is different, DH is Romanian and we wanted a name that can be used in the US and Romania.

 but who responds like that?

  • Not the response you were looking for, but not the worst either.  She may have loved it.

  • Maybe she thought it was an eighth child?

Sometimes it's hard to think of a quick but nice response when the name isn't what you're used to.  I asked a classmate of mine what his daughter's name was.  Her name is Malka but when he said it I was trying to figure out if he said Malcolm so I was a little confused and just said "oh, okay".  I felt like an idiot afterwards for not having a better response but I was surprised.

  • Please dont take such offense to peoples reaction to your baby name. I love unique names and would much rather deal with people's sometimes odd reactions to my childrens names than pick names that are trends and everyone in the world seem to get stuck on. Most people tend to go with what is "popular" or "easy" b/c they get ideas off of others. I like your baby name!

  • Sorry, I think you need to get used to that kind of a reaction with an unusual name like that.

  • Just laugh it off... she didn't say anything negative, just showed surprise at a name that is pretty unusual in America. I definitely agree that it is much more European, and I love Euro names. I think the nickname is adorable. You will probably get a lot of surprised reactions here in the US though....

I agree. But I wouldn't let it change your mind or anything. It's nice to use ethnic names... you just have to understand that it may be odd for some people.

  • I love that name, but couldn't get DH on board. I also loved Augustus, but he said NO. boo.

This. Exactly. You need to have thick skin or you are going to be offended for many years.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. You could pick out the most perfect name and someone is going to find something wrong w/ it. If you like it that is all that matters.

This is also why we aren't going to share our baby's name until he's born.

  • That's why you don't tell people the names until the baby is born.
  • When you go w/ an unusual name, you need to have a thicker skin.  We went w/ an unusual Irish name and my MIL was VERY vocal about not liking it.  My MIL. not some stranger in a store.

I didnt' care then and I still don't care.  Her opinion doesn't matter, and a strangers would matter even less.

Ditto.  DS has an ethic name which isn't familiar to most Americans (yet) & I've gotten puzzled looks & inconsiderate responses, but you just have to be prepared for it.  That said, you'll appreciate it when you travel to your DH's home country & no one gives the name a second thought.

  • Generally used to demonstrate shock.  It is the nice way of saying they don't like it when nothing else is offered.
  • I like it!
  • LMAO! I think that story is hilarious. What do you care what a random cashier thinks about your baby name choices?! Your offense at a stranger's reaction and opinion make me question how much you really love this name.
