So today DH and I went to the store to buy some yummy cherries, as we are checking out the cashier is doing the usual routine of questions. When are you due, do you know if it is a boy or girl, and what is his name going to be?
Well LO's name is going to Octavian. (Ovi for short)
The cashier looks at us and says, "WOW!" that's it.
I know it is different, DH is Romanian and we wanted a name that can be used in the US and Romania.
but who responds like that?
Re: I was so offened
I agree. But I wouldn't let it change your mind or anything. It's nice to use ethnic names... you just have to understand that it may be odd for some people.
This. Exactly. You need to have thick skin or you are going to be offended for many years.
I wouldn't worry about it. You could pick out the most perfect name and someone is going to find something wrong w/ it. If you like it that is all that matters.
This is also why we aren't going to share our baby's name until he's born.
When you go w/ an unusual name, you need to have a thicker skin. We went w/ an unusual Irish name and my MIL was VERY vocal about not liking it. My MIL. not some stranger in a store.
I didnt' care then and I still don't care. Her opinion doesn't matter, and a strangers would matter even less.

Ditto. DS has an ethic name which isn't familiar to most Americans (yet) & I've gotten puzzled looks & inconsiderate responses, but you just have to be prepared for it. That said, you'll appreciate it when you travel to your DH's home country & no one gives the name a second thought.
