GD Testing With a Glucometer...Anyone?

Due to special diet circumstances (not pregnancy related) I am unable to drink the "glucola" for my GD testing. I hear from others that I have "lucked out" by not having to drink this stuff! Anyway, I was wondering if there was anyone else who is/has tested for GD with a glucometer?  I was wondering also what a "good" number is and what a "bad" number is?

TIA! for any info you may be able to share with me!

Re: GD Testing With a Glucometer...Anyone?

  • I had to do it last time with my DS. ?The ?booklet they ?give you will have all the info on the high and low range of where you are supposed to be. ?I had to go take a special course on how to use it, and show the nurse that ?I could do it myself. Your doctor's office should set you up, or refer you to a maternal fetal specialist if you don't see one already. ?Pricking yourself kinda sucks, but other than that I found it interesting to see what foods had what kind of effect on my body. ?Good Luck and eat well.

  • My endocrinologist says the desirable numbers are <90 for fasting and <120 for 2 hours after meals.  I had GD with my first pregnancy and am starting insulin with my second baby.  The pricking isn't fun, but you get used to it.  I was pre-diabetic after my baby was born, so I've been pricking myself 3-4 times a day for 2.5 years, plus insulin injections at different times.  Your doctor should probably refer you to an endocrinologist who will give you all the info you need,  probably a free meter and basic supplies and possibly a meal plan.
  • Thanks for the info. The Ob's office loaned me a glucometer. I purchased the test strips and lancets. It is really not so bad to do the pricking. The lancet is loaded into a spring load thing that I can adjust the dial as to how deep the lancet goes. My nurse just gave me instructions on how many times per day. A fasting test in the am and a test two hours after each meal for the next two weeks. She didn't really explain a good number and a bad number. I also forgot to ask. After two tests yesterday and one fasting today. My numbers have been between 71 and 81 so I think so far I am ok. I did read some info on levels last night on google.

    Thanks again for the info!
