Babies: 9 - 12 Months

My babysitter locked herself out of my house while babysitting. FOR THREE HOURS!

We came home at midnight to find her sitting on the porch with her bag of Chinese food. She had ordered it earlier and when she opened the door to pay the delivery guy, she said our dog pushed the door closed (uh huh). Anyway, she sat on the porch while my baby girl slept inside the house for three freakin' hours. We were three blocks away at a restaurant having dinner and listening to music afterward. It's not a large town. She said she left her phone in the hosue. Could she not have run to a neighbor's house and called the restaurant? Um, dear babysitter....you're fired. You're in college. If you can't solve that problem in three hours, what makes me think you'll solve a bigger one in a few seconds (i.e. DD choking, house on fire, etc.) Oy.

  • Are you KIDDING me??? WTF? Could she hear the baby or see the baby through the window? What a freaking moron.
  • yikes!  Way to problem solve, babysitter!
  • Oh, and the best part was that she got attacked by mosquitos while sitting on the porch. She had a big fat bite smack in the middle of her forehead. Serves her right. I hope she had a lot more in places I couldn't see.
  • Wowww I would have been screaming my lungs out at her! Did she not think of what would happen if she DID need to get in really quickly?! What an idiot.

  • Indifferent I would have been LIVID. Sure, accidents happen but there is no shr really thought it was okay to leave that child in there for THREE HOURS. Wow.
  • I agree with you, fire her. When I was 14 I babysat for the same family every week with 3 boys age infant, 4 and 6. One day I just had the infant and couldn't get the childproof lock on his door to work(he was sleeping when I went over there and I wanted to check on him). I was getting ready to run over to the neighbor's to ask for help and I gave it one more try and got it. I felt so bad but he wasn't even crying, he was actually still sleeping.
  • I hope you let her know what a stupid moron she was.

    This made me laugh!

  • Yeah I would definitely be kicking her A$$ to the curb.
  • We were livid, but honestly, more stunned by idiocy than anything. We told her we were very disappointed and wouldn't be inviting her back. She's a friend of a friend, so needed to maintain some dignity, though I really just wanted to scream and pull her hair out. Unreal. I just kept saying, "are you KIDDING me?!" over and over (with the pitch getting more shrill each time). Unbelievable.
  • Surprise

I do believe she should win the babysitter of the year award.

  • Wow. That's unfreakingbelievable.

When I saw the title of your post, I thought she did it and called you right away and I was thinking- well, that could happen to anyone...and I assumed she had the baby with her. (in my head, it just happened and she and your DD were on a walk or something).

Yea, she shouldn't be babysitting anymore. By the way- I LOVE your daugher's name. Eve is sooooooooo pretty.

Did you say anything to her? I would of told her off.
  • Did you pay her? I would have refused to pay her.
  • Agreed. It could have happened to anyone, and I have locked myself out before. However, I figured it out, so why couldn't she? Afterward, we did the...."what would I have done in the same situation" thing. Both of us said we would have found a way to get in touch with the parents, called the police...basically ANYTHING to get back inside that house. I couldn't believe she just sat there. Thank God nothing happened to Eve. I can't even think about that part.

Thanks re: your comment on her name. Smile

  • Nope. No $$$ when you don't actually sit inside my house.
  • was she too scared to leave the house to find a phone? yikes. that is no good. my mom did this once while watching my cousin. she was ready to break the window to get in when a neighbor with a key showed up. honestly as a parent i would have preferred a broken window or the cops at my house than just having her sit outside. i mean it's great that he was asleep but what if he woke up?!?

  • Holy hell.

My nanny did this, but she immediately called me and I came home to let them in the house. Needless to say, she had a key from then on.

    I am seriously appalled.  Surprise

  • While i am not defending her at all, does she know your cell phone number by heart? Did she know the name of where you were? If not, if that info was in the house, it wouldn't do much good for her to go to a neighbors to call you.

You call information and get the # of the restaurant.  No problem there.  Or if you guys were only 3 blocks away couldn't she have gotten a friend to walk over there or go over and get you guys?

Unbelievable!  I wouldn't have been able to keep my cool that is abso-frickin-lutely ridiculous!!

I get this. But what I was asking is if she knew the name of the restaurant. Often when dh and I go out we don't know exactly where we are going and leave our babysitters with our cell phone numbers.

  •

If she didn't know ANY info though she could have called the cops. They would have gotten into that house!

  • I get what you mean, but yes, she did know where we were, and could have gotten someone to call and ask for us. It's a small town, so the proprietors know us. Even so, I would have enlisted the help of a neighbor or the police. If I were the babysitter, someone would've gotten me into that house.
