So, I have Melasma from Mirena. I have to go get my tubes tied :-(

It really isnt the end of the world, but it does seem rather, um, PERMANENT. We aren't planning on having anymore kids, but still. It is PERMANENT.

The hormones in the Mirena are causing me to get Melasma a.k.a "Pregnancy Mask". It is like a huge freckle the size of half of a dollar bill on either side of my face...

So, after discussing options, this really is the choice I have made. Well, I should say, WE made, but it was mostly me.

I have my consultation on Tuesday.. I wonder if they can suck some of my belly fat while they are in there?

  • Sorry that you have to do something so permanent.  That sucks.  I guess at least it didn't happen before you even had kids.  GL

  • I have Melasma but the dermatologist gave me a creme to use on it and it has faded to almost nothing (and I'm very, very fair skinned so everything shows up).  It does come back if I go in the sun but I put that creme and it fades to almost nothing.
  • Oooh, that sucks.  I'm sorry pumpkin.  I'm telling you, make your hubs get the snip.  On the chance that you have the same nasty recovery from laparscopic surgery that I did, you'll be cussing and wishing you put your foot down on that one.  Truuuuuuust me!  Make him do it.
  • I'm with kitty on this one. I had my gallbladder removed laproscopically and I will never have abdominal surgery again if I can help it. My recovery blew goats.
  • Why isnt your DH stepping up to do a 15 minute office procedure with a 1 day recovery period vs you having invasive surgery with a much longer recovery?? My DH just got a vasectomy a few weeks ago and he was back to 100% within 2 days. I've had laporoscopic surgery before and the recovery was HORRIBLE.

If he wont do it, you should kick him in the balls and then look into getting Essure (I think that's what it's called) or maybe even an non-hormonal copper IUD?

  • uh, mel (asma) why can't jeff get the snip snip?

then at least YOU can have more kids!

  • That stinks! I am sorry you have to do something so permanent if you don't want to!

  • Oh, he is totally willing to get snipped. But for some reason, I dont feel confident about a Vas. being completely reliable...

That was originally the plan actually, but now, I dont know. Maybe we will each get snipped, you know, make it even. LOL!

  • They're much better than they were years ago. They take out a much larger section, and then burn and tie. It's pretty hard to even have reversed now. Once they're cleared, the chances are pretty slim of it not working (it still worries me, though!)

    Ugh sorry to hear.

I agree with the others- make him take one for the team! It will be even- you had the babies :)

  • That sucks but I agree, have your H get a vasectomy.

They're great and if you get your tubes tied, I hear it alters your hormones in a not so good way.

Really????? I had not heard this... I dont need to be any more wackadoodle than I already am....

  • I watched by dh's vasectomy and lemme tell ya: they removed a good sized section, cauterized/burned the ends, AND stitched them shut. I look at it this way: if those little suckers can manage to grow back together after all of that (which seems impossible once you've seen the procedure done), his sperm were to start swimming again and I found myself pregnant...well, in that case dh and I would both accept it as the universe's way of telling us that there was a BIG reason why that child needed to be born, LOL.
  • Why not just treat the Melasma??

    BWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!

Well, because the hormones in my birth control are causing it, the best way to treat it would be to remove the source.

I did get a prescription for cream to use also.

  • I know that this is still permanent, but did you consider essure?
