When did you see OB and MFM?

I was released from my RE last week. I called my OB today to schedule an appt. They gave me an appt on July 30th to meet with the nurse to discuss my medical history. I'll be 13 weeks. Does it seems odd they don't want to see me sooner? I'm not even sure if my OB refers MoMs to Maternal Fetal Medicine (perinatologist). I also haven't received any guidance on weight gain other than my RE's office telling me to eat an additional 500 calories. Is it normal not to see an OB until 13 weeks or should I call back tomorrow and try to get in earlier?

Re: When did you see OB and MFM?

  • My personal experience was finding out I was having twins at 12 weeks and seeing my Perinatologist at 13 weeks for my NT scan.  He will see me again in 4 weeks and then after that every 2 weeks.  My twins are identical.  I had to switch OB's because of the fact that I am having twins and will see my new OB on Thursday for the first time and we will see how often she wants to see me.

  • I should all that prior to that I was seeing my previous OB every 4 weeks, saw her at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks.  Then we found out it was twins.
  • I should add that prior to that I was seeing my previous OB every 4 weeks, saw her at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks.  Then we found out it was twins.
  • released from my RE after my 8w appt.

Saw my Ob at 9w (made the appt around 7w).

saw Peri for the first time at 12w - then saw monthly after that until i was 36w, then weekly.

saw my OB more often than I did with my singleton pg, too - started weekly around 30w i think.

    congrats!

  • I don't think it's bad to wait until 13w to be seen by your OB seeing as how at the beginning, a multiple pg isn't really different from a singleton pg.  My OB doesn't send MoM's to peri's, he said he's gone through all of the specialized training, and even if he hasn't, I have complete confidence in him.  As far as weight gain, let your doc be your guide, if they're worried they'll let you know.
  • I couldnt get in to my OB until 13 weeks also, I called him at about 7 or 8 weeks to make the appt and I was pretty frustrated that it took that long but I found out after the fact that it was b/c the midwife had recently switched to just doing GYN and no OB so he was way overloaded. My RE had given me the info about the 1st tri screening so we (MH & I) talked about it at home &made the decision to not do it since we couldnt get in to the OB in time. I think the OB's office also knew I was coming from the RE & already had all the basic 1st tri testing etc done.?

Mine refers to peri for the 1st tri screening if you want it & for the 18 week growth scan & leaves it up to the patient if she wants to continue going to the peri (unless there are complications of course). We decided not to go after that ultrasound because my pregnancy was/is uncomplicated and we have a lot of trust in my OB's experience with multiples.?

  • I wasn't released from my RE until 12 weeks - so I didn't see the OB until then. My RE hadn't really given me any guidance either - but I had bought Dr. Lukes book had been going off that. Honestly, I got more info from this board and from Dr. Lukes book then I did from my OB. My OB just said to keep weight gain to 50lbs, and don't eat rew fish.

We saw the peri for our NT scan at 13 weks 2 days - it has to be done by 13 weeks 6 days so that would be my only concern with not seeing the OB until 13 weeks. Maybe call to see if they can set up your NT scan (if you want to have it) since it is time sensitive.

  • i didn't see my MFM until 16 weeks for the first in-depth ultrasound. i saw my OB every three weeks until then. (from 4.5 weeks, when i went for my first appt.)

i'm not too surprised your OB doesn't want to see you until then. my OB didn't treat me any differently from a singleton pregnancy until 20 weeks.

  • I was released from RE at 8 weeks, saw my OB at 8 weeks and every two weeks since then. I have my MFM appointment scheduled for 18 weeks, I'm currently 12 weeks.
