3rd Trimester

If kegels were so important...

why wouldn't my Dr ever mention them?

I was reading some responses over on 1st tri from ladies who already have a baby and they were all saying if you didn't do them you would have to wear depends and wouldn't be able to cough without peeing.

My mom said she never did kegels and didn't have a problem.  Are they really all they are cracked up to be?

Re: If kegels were so important...

  • My dr. hasn't mentioned them either..

  • My OB hasn't mentioned them, but the L&D nurse that led our child birth class did.?

I don't think you're doomed if you don't do them, but they can certainly help IMO. ?

  • I wondered this same question and asked my female dr about them - she said she never did them. She said most likely if you're going to have complications or incontinence problems from delivery, etc, you're going to - kegels won't prevent them. She said the only thing you CAN do is if you do wind up with incontinence or other issues post delivery, talk to your dr, there are excercises and therapy you can do to help.
  • I stink at doing them but have only the occasional slip during a sneeze or cough (during pregnancy-never when I am not pregnant). Never had a problem after DS was born. It might just be that some women have weaker muscle down there. Not sure.
  • Actually my dr mentioned them to me...

I told her about how the baby likes to dance on my bladder when it's full and she said, "have you wet your pants yet from that? do your kegels!"

It can't hurt right? So I do them when I remember....like now because you all mentioned it...ha!

  • My doctor did bring them up and so has a lot of other people I have talked to. I dont know personally though.

  • There are a lot of things that are followed religiously here, mentioned online and in pregnancy books that my dr never mentioned- kegels, lunch meat, back sleeping. I had to ask about them! Well, I never asked about kegels but the other two my dr told me not to worry about at all.

Anyway, I'm the opposite of your mom. With DS, I did do kegels but DID have problems. LOL

  • My doctor has mentioned them.

  • I never did them much and I didn't have peeing issues.  But if your pelvic mucles are weak, they can make more of a difference.  If you already have strong pelvic muscles, they aren't as necessary.

  • My doc didn't bring them up until later in my pregnancy.  Why not do them though...just in case. I know I had more issues after DS, I can't imagine what I'd be like if I hadn't done them.

  • I have a friend who did them, and just recently had surgery to fix her incontince issues (her child is now 7).
  • I never did them with DD and never had any issues during pregnancy.

This time I've had a lot of pressure and discomfort, and doing kegels has really helped with that.

Either way, it can't hurt to do them, but I wouldn't worry if you don't.

I'm not against doing them.  I just forget to do them.

  • gotcha.  I always forgot too when I was pg with DS, and now I wonder if that's why I had more issues.

  • I do them but I don't ever remember hearing my OB mention it. I also have not snissed yet so I'm guessing the Kegels are a good thing...LOL

  • I dont know if this means anything, but I have been doing kegels since before I was pg. I don't have a super-strong bladder (ie, when I have to pee, I have to go NOW), but I have never once through this pregnancy had any leakage or snissing, and I am almost 40 weeks.

  • Both my doctor and my doula said they weren't important to do before birth, but could be very helpful afterwards.
  • My doctor has never mentioned them. I didn't do them with my last pregnancy and never had an issue.
  • Lets see...DS is almost 6. My midwife mentioned them during one of my early appts when preg with DS and I have done them tons ever since. During pregnancy, postpartum during recovery and at least a few times a week since then. Yes that right...I have been doing them for 6 freakin years and I still cannot run or sneeze or laugh my arse off without peeing. I wear a liner every day because it's the most discusting leftover from haivng kids. I sure hope I can do something to fix it after I'm done having babies...I HATE it. So IMO they are not all they are cracked up to be. The only upside is that DH says he can't tell the diff from before and after kids (sex wise) so maybe they helped in that department??

Yesss!!! There is hope for me yet!!!

  • My doctor has never mentioned them. I only do them every now and then, and have to wonder if they really actually work. But I think it's just going to depend on the mom. I've sneezed and coughed, and all I get outta that is pain in my ribs from them spreading (Geez, no one ever warns you about that!).

So I really think that if you feel that it's necessary, then you should do them. But if you think it's going to be so terrrible....well it's up to you. And always, ALWAYS remember while you're listening to horror stories of those who became mom's before us, EVERY PREGNANCY IS DIFFERENT!

  • My doctor never once said anything about them but I had always heard they were important to do so I did them. Better safe than sorry I guess
