I'm sure this has been posted numerous times, but I never got in on the discussions. I know some midwives and doulas will do this, but is anyone planning on doing it themselves before going into labor? If so, how often?
I've heard mixed things. Basically the negatives are that it's out dated and can cause bowel incontinence after you give birth. My Dr recommended against it.

Seriously? I'd never heard that, thanks -- clearly I have some reading to do!
Yes I've heard of it from step-MIL (who has 5 children and has never torn or been cut) Unfortunately, even after doing the massage (light stretching with KY as recommended by midwife) I still had an episiotomy done. Youch. It works for some people, worth a shot!
I've also heard that frequent squatting is more helpful as prep. During labor, though, if you have a midwife or doula who does perineal massage it can be helpful.
