Stopping swaddling? What did you do?

DD is breaking out of her swaddle now, so I think it's time to transition her away from it. Did you do it cold turkey or the one arm method?

I put her down for her nap about 25 minutes ago, and she hasn't been upset (yay!) but she also isn't napping (boo.). She's playing with her hands and feet.

Ok, I hear her on the monitor now. She's getting upset now, but I think it's just because she's really tired. What did you do?

Re: Stopping swaddling? What did you do?

  • We did the gradual one arm out, then two arms, then no swaddle.  We moved a step every 3 days or so, but we did go back a few times.  Once we were successful with one arm out the other went pretty easily.

  • We swaddle on and off. Usually we do it at night so he STTN but not for naps. If we put him down for a nap without the Swaddle Me and he won't fall asleep, we will put the monitor on. We have a light projecting one that has the regular music and animals but also projects a picture upwards. He looks at that and eventually falls asleep. We also use a paci, which helps.

DS hated the swaddle from the day we got home and always kicked out of it, so we started putting him in a sleep sack.  He likes it and sleeps very well.

  • We just switched cold turkey from swaddle to sleepsack.  He was just too interested in getting his hands into his mouth.  I think he remained jerky for a day or two but not so much that it woke him up.  We love the sleep sack now!
  • DS was pulling his arms out at one week so we only swaddled below them. At about 3 weeks he started breaking out so we quit cold turkey.
  • We did it cold turkey along with a transition from sleeping in his car seat (to help with reflux the dr actually suggested this) to his crib.  It took about a week or waking twice during the night just wanting to be held, to him now sleeping for 8-9 hours a night, we never did the swaddle for naps though.
