3rd Trimester

Does anyone know anything about Cytotec used for induction?

I just got back from my 39 week appointment and she went over my induction that is scheduled for Monday (if I don't go this week/weekend). She said she prefers to use Cytotec vaginally to induce labor.  Anyone have any experience with this or info.  Being induced because I am measuring 5 weeks ahead.  TIA

  • Do your research.  This drug is NOT approved for that use and can lead to some scary stuff.

  • This is your second crappy reply to me!  If topics annoys you so much don't freaking reply.  I HAVE researched and that is why I am asking for advise from others who may have experience with this drug.  But THANKS :)

This!  OMG.  This is an off-label use of the drug and the potential side effects are truly horrifying.

Uh, that was not a crappy response...it was helpful and true.  Be careful, very very careful with this stuff.

Well in that case if you're comfortable with the potential complications might I suggest asking the 0-6 board as they are probably more likely to have experienced the drug.

  • I don't see how that's a crappy reply - cytotec is not approved by the FDA for use as a labor-inducing drug. It can cause uterine rupture and death. Sorry to be so blunt, but when there are other options that the FDA has approved that are much safer, I don't see the point in risking it (or in ignoring people who don't tell you what you it seems you really want to hear, which is "Cytotec is awesome! Go for it!").
  • JCM didn't give you a crappy response -- she just told you what you didn't want to hear.

But even Cytotec manufacturer's do not recommend it for inducing labor.

    oh, and it's advice.

If you're going to throw a tantrum, at least double-check your grammar & spelling so I can take you seriously.

  • I looked it up on drugs at medscape.com (my favorite site to refer to) and although its not approved for use as an induction, it has been known to be used as such. "This medication may also be used to assist with childbirth only at the time of delivery (e.g., cervical ripening, induction of labor) and for the treatment of severe bleeding after delivery. When misoprostol is used vaginally for these purposes, it works by causing the womb muscles to contract."

    Hope that helps a little.

    LOL

And if you wanted ADVICE from those who have done it, asking the 3rd tri board (while some are 2nd+ time moms, most of us aren't) seems a little odd.  Your post looks like you were just looking for any info on it, which was given.

  • This drug is definitely not a preferred method. If you would like to try natural methods: cervical balloon, stripping of membranes, evening primrose oil, etc. Other methods: Cervadil possibly with Pitocin.

  • ITA with all the other posters - it should not be used as an induction method. I believe the movie "Pregnant in America" showed a family who lost their daughter and grandchild because Cytotec was used to induce. It was really heartbreaking.

Sazzie, where did you see Pregnant in America?  I've been wanting to see it for a couple of years now, but don't know where to find it!

I watched that too and it was the first time I had heard that cytotec wasn't FDA approved. I would be safe and request an alternative.

How on earth was this a crappy reply?  She was giving you exactly the advice you asked for and it's absolutely accurate.  Use cytotec if you want, certainly many doctors still do.  But it is no approved for this use.

One drawback of cytotec, as I understand it, is it can't be turned "off" once it's started, whereas cervidil can be removed.

  • I was given this vaginally for my first delivery. I recieved 4 doses over 12 hours and had no negative effects from it. I had hardly any pain at all from contractions and dialated to a 4 over the 12 hours. The real pain came after my water broke and contractions picked up. Everyone will have a different reaction to it like everything else. Just do your research and ask your dr/midwife and do what you feel is comfortable for you. Good luck and I hope you have your LO before next week!
