Do you use clothe or G diapers?

How do you like them?  My girlfriend was just telling me  she found somewhere that says clothe diapers use so much water to clean that they arent really better for the environment so now I am rethinking it.

Re: Do you use clothe or G diapers?

  • Cloth still comes out better than disposible in both environmental friendliness and cost.  They're especially better if you use the cloth for more than one kid.  I don't have it in me to find you the articles right now, but I know that I've seen discussions on here before.  We had great success with cloth for the first 8 months, and then we couldn't get the girls to stay dry even through naps.  G Diapers never worked for us, but our friends really love them.

Good to know!  I was thinking of making my own cloth diapers.... and just buying the covers.

  • We didn't have any luck with prefolds.  A lot of people like them though.  You should also consider trying some pocket diapers like BumGenius.  They're wonderful and one size fits all.  We really liked KnickerNappies, and they're made locally.  You can find used ones easily - in fact, I have some to sell if you want to try them.

  • Ok... I have heard of BumGenius but haven't really looked at them till now.  I will talk to my DH about them.  How many KnickerNappies do you have and how much do you want to sell them for?  And what colors lol.  So they have reuseable inserts?  And do you really wash them 2-3 times?  That seems like a lot.  :)  Ok.. my 20 Q's are over!

  • DH's favorite were KnickerNappies.  I have no idea how much to charge, so you can make an offer.  Let me make a list of everything, and you can tell me if you're interested.

  • Yes, they have inserts that are pulled out and washed with the diapers.  They're so easy to use.

We washed one cycle on high with Charlie's soap.  We didn't have time for multiple washes or soaking.  Sometimes we put them in the sun to bleach them.

  • Good to know! :)  3 washes was going to be too much!  LOL

Ditto. I can't believe that it would even be close. A few more loads of laundry (~3/wk for us) is way better than a huge amount of waste sitting in a landfill forever (and than there's manufacturing waste/energy, transportation, packaging...)

Since DD is in newborn sizes, we're using Kissaluv fitteds and prefolds with thirsties and bum genius covers. It's working really well for us. Fitteds are suuuuper easy. I rented them from Nell's, with a final cost of $25/month, which is super cheap. We'll probably do one-size pockets for the rest of her diapering time..

  • Oh, and I've heard mixed reviews on G diapers. Some people seem to really like them, but others don't at all.

And The Eco-Friendly Family board has a ton of CDing moms and is a good place to lurk or ask questions.

  • We use cloth too. Mainly prefolds (love the imsie vimsie (or something like that) cotton covers. We have some pockets around too, for overnight and babysitters :)

We do a rinse and then full cycle to wash them. It is a piece of cake and far better than letting disposables sit in landfills :)

  • Liane, I am interested.  If you get me the list, I will discuss it with my husband. :)
