High-Risk Pregnancy

BP Question--Procardia not working--anyone else?

hi ladies-

i am sure it will be sort of odd that i am posting here seeing as i am *not* pregnant. forgive me for my imposition--i am ttc and having issues with high BP so i have been over here lurking. my OB told me i would most likely be high risk if and when i am able to conceive. she put me on procardia to lower my high bp (not pregnancy induced, obviously) since it's baby friendly. i didn't respond to that medication and she then put me on procardia xr and moved my dosage from 30mg-60 mgs and still nothing.

today i am going to another physician for the bp and am hoping and praying he can put me on something that will be same so i can continue ttc. have any of you had issues with this and found success with other meds? i am fearful that procardia is my only alternative and with that not working im worried about my options.

i would love to hear any of your experiences--obviously my circumstances are different but i am just trying to arm myself with information prior to my appointment if at all possible. thanks, ladies!

Don't fear.  There are other medications.  Procardia is just easy because it's once a day and pretty well tolerated.  You're not even on the max dose :)  90mg is the max dose that we generally use in ob.  I have seen patients with bp issues from lupus on 4 meds, and you have obviously not reached that point!  So don't lose heart.  Ask about labetalol and aldomet and if necessary, combining meds.  Please don't lose heart!  You'll get there :)

  • thanks so much for your kind reply. i had hoped my OB would just up my dosage of procardia since she said she could go higher but she referred me to another dr who she says she works closely with. i will definately mention the labeltol and aldomet to him to see if those are options. thank you again for your info and encouragement :)

  • I had PIH that never went away after delivery.  Before I had DS, I was put on procardia and they were constantly increasing my dose because it really didn't help much.  I had a much better response to labatalol.

  • I am ttc too.  I also have high BP.  Toporol XL is what they have tried on me.  It is not working very well on me but it may work for you.  I am in the same situation.  The BP meds I have been on for the past 10 years is not prego friendly.  We are trying to find the right one for me.
