Budgeting with the economy...

Have you noticed the economy affecting you at all??

Have you noticed you've been cutting back on things like shopping, eating out, etc... ?

?

Re: Budgeting with the economy...

  • We have cut back on entertainment. It's ok with me, though because I usually feel like crap anyways lately.
  • Loading the player...
  • I had to stick with my job teaching online classes, which pays OK, but not the kind of money I wanted to be making. The job market was rough and so FI and I are settling with my job.

We don't really go out anymore. And I've only been buying groceries that we need, rather than want. Etc.

  • we have cut back on going out to dinner and movies etc.. just because baby is coming into the picture.. if it were just us.. it probably wouldn't affect us at all.
  • The economy has BIG time hit us. DH lost his job in May and we are fighting quite the battle to get our subsidized COBRA.. so with all that we have had to really reevaluate our finances and make some serious changes/cut backs.?

Other than the sucky economy though.. we have been dealing with all sorts of unexpected situations since we started TTC. A breast lump requiring a biopsy and all kinds of testing, then once we got PG I was diagnosed with HG and spent lots of time in and out of the hospital (bills, bills, bills) and ended up having to quit my job and take a MAJOR pay cut with my current job, then our AC went out and needed to be replaced, I needed new tires on my car to pass inspection - what savings we had built up before TTC has been just about wiped out. :( ?

Our monthly budget looks totally different now than it did a year ago. ?

    ?

  • Oh my gosh you sound like me... When I got pregnant I was not expecting to be as sick as I've been I also was diagnosed with HG and even with good health insurance there are so many co-pays and bills from hospital stays and IV's in the infusion center... then I've been seeing an ear specialist for my right ear have had a horrible infection for the past 5 months that won't go away so all those co-pays and medicine bills.?

Then I had to quit my job which was great pay... the only negative side to my job is a lot of over time was worked and I had to work Saturdays and had no sick time... so it probably would not have worked in the end with a newborn and a five year old. I'm kind of glad since I am going back in January to finish my BA only two years left it's totally worth going and finishing it.

Then lets see we had so much in savings and then around Christmas (which we had here at the house) our addition that is on our house has a flat roof which cost us this Spring about 7-8,000 dollars just for the flat roof which the square footage is big so that is probably why and then we had to use rubber roofing which is expensive....

Next we had to gut the bathroom that is going to be our five year old daughters room because there was water damage so there went about another 5,000 or more to redo that... thankfully my in laws had extra tile from their sunroom so the tile was something we did not have to buy.

Oh and then about three weeks ago our hot water heater went out on us and there was about 6-700.00 dollars out the window... it's seriously never ending...

We had a lot in savings too and now it's like bye bye... thankfully though husband has a great job and I have to be thankful for that. It is very hard to take a pay cut and go down to one income and it's hard when I want and I want things and get get get, and I'm kind of having to change what I want at the moment etc... it's hard, but I feel fortunate to have what I have.?

So I am just crossing my fingers that nothing major goes wrong within the next two to three years until I have my degree etc... Husband said that if it gets really bad he'll deploy for six months for the government (civilian) but really do not want that to happen...?

  • Yes.  On everything (less pricey foods, entertainment, eating out).  Hopefully things will get better!
  • We have been lucky at this point to not be currently affected by the economy.  However, the planned expansion at DH's job is not happening because of the economy and he was promoted to be part of that expansion.  There isn't a concern of him losing his job, but we have minimized our expenses with the possibility of him having hours cut in the future.  Plus we want me to be able to stay home with the baby so we are trying to cut out unnecessary things anyway.
  • Our lives have changed drastically due to this :(

  • Our lives have changed due to this...
  • We have. Not as bad now but last year DH and I were both laid off. We are good now but I have us on a budget (something we didn't think about 2 years ago). We have cut back on going out (being pregnant helps with that), rent movies instead of going out to them, eating in more often. I got on the Ellen mothers day show and that has helped out a lot.
  • Our lifestyle is completely different than it was a year ago.  The biggest change had been our expendable income (entertainement, eating out, hobbies, travel, etc.), which is now about completely non-existent.  I've always had a budget, but I could move numbers around with no problem.  Now, we stick to it and no shifting money around!

  • We've pretty much cut back on...EVERYTHING. DH is an industrial painter and work has been really slow. Plus with the baby coming, we're worried about saving everything so that we can still provide for him on a rainy day. Definitely not the situation we had envisioned ourselves being in when we got pregnant!

  • I lost my job and DH has been given notice his company is closing. I would say that is HUGE effect on our budget.  Eatting out what is that oh yeah something we used to beable to do when ever we wanted now we are lucky if we eat a $1 burger.  Shopping we are buying things we need but the wants are few and far between.  We did endup buying the baby a crib but only after the one we got from a friend was recalled (two years ago they didn't think to look and were using it) and craigslist seems only to list recalled ones.
