Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Don't think I can do Ferber tomorrow :(

This is awful and I am crying.  Last night (night 1) he cried for 67 minutes.  I was out for a walk cause I can't stand the crying.  He only slept for 50 minutes in the pack and play before he woke up! Tonight (night 2) he cried for 90 minutes. I went to target and DH was in charge.  He threw up.  SO DH picked him up, changed him and out him back down.  Finally at about 82 minutes I went in and stayed in until he fell asleep.  I feel like I am being cruel to my baby and can't do this tomorrow night.  DH will be at a baseball game.  I may try a variation of Ferber.  I am desperate DS wakes 3-5 times per night and only sleeps in our bed.    Waiting to see how long he sleeps tonight.

  • Aw I'm sorry this must be incredibly hard.  I haven't had to try ferber yet but I can't even stand to hear my DD cry for 10 minutes.  I hope it gets better for you and your poor DS.  GL!

  • I'm so sorry!  It was better for us last night, and I'm hoping we turned the corner.  Our pedi said to commit to 1 week.  If after a week it wasn't working for us, try a variation, or wait a few weeks and try again.  Good luck!

  • are you going in there and doing checks? I find it just riles him up more to do that.

  • That sounds so hard, I'm sorry you are going through that.  Sad   It's so awful to listen to them cry.

Good luck with trying a variation - I've heard a lot of people swear Ferber works, but others say that its not the right method for their baby.

We tried a modifed CIO -  I just tired to stay consistent with my 'method' for a couple weeks, and it did get better.

    Hang in there

  • Our first night letting DS cry was HORRIBLE. It was the worst night of my life. He cried for 60 mins, and I know I made it worse because I went in, picked him up, cuddled him, put him back down. But when he fell asleep he STTN. for the first time since 3 mos (before teething). After that, we just make sure he's really tired, has a full belly and put him down. It only took one night. Maybe you should move his bedtime back and really tire him out first. I know it's sooo hard, but keep working at it. I was in your same situation, DH works nights, DS was up every 2 hours... sleeping in our bed. He's now asleep at 730-8 and up at 430 for a change (sometimes) or just a paci. and then sleeps til 8a. Good luck and do what you can... it WILL get easier. Make sure he's reallllllly tired!
  • Oh that is really so hard.  I don't know what I would do if I were you.  Some variation of Ferber might be more successful if you are consistent with whatever you decide.  We did Ferber about 6 weeks ago and it worked pretty well, but the last couple of weeks he is up for 2-4 hours in the middle of the night, wants to nurse at least 2 times and would cry for hours if I left him in the crib.  I was in tears last night.  I hate when we just don't know what to do to help them and us.  Good luck with whatever you decide.  He has to sleep someday, right?

  • I'm so sorry! I totally feel for you and other mom's who have to make a decision like this. I am blessed to have a child who goes right to sleep, but  I know I would be so sad and frustrated in your position.

  • DH and I just don't know what else to do.  We have tried everything.  I have never felt this bad before in my life.  Thanks for all the input.  It is always helpful!

  • I feel like I could of written this.  We had a baby who slept through the night and then just started waking up 4-5 times a night.  we both work so after some time we would just bring her into our bed.  Now that is what she wants. Both nights that we have tried to let her cry she throws up, she had only been crying for 5 min both times.  I called the dr today and I am not sure if I am buying it but they told me that a baby will throw up becuase they know that if the crying is getting attention the throw up will.  I just don't know what to do.  I hope that it gets easier for you!!

I reached my breaking point when my DS was albot 9 months old.  He literally wouldn't sleep without a boob in his mouth and I was barely sleeping.  Anytime I would detach him he'd wake up and start crying.  I started out by doing a long nursing session downstairs and then laying down with him upstairs without nursing.  I'd let him squirm around, whine, cry, whatever while I laid there and acted like I was asleep.  I did this for about a week just so he could get used to putting himself to sleep without nursing.  Then I moved him to his crib.  I went in there more frequently than Ferber recommends and DH and I switched off.  We also kept the crib in our room so he was used to the surroundings.  It was heartbreaking and I'm glad it's over with.  The first night was really bad.. the second night was worse.. the third it started to improve.  He did better with my DH putting him down than with me since I made him want to nurse.  By the end of the first week I saw a huge improvement.  Do what's right for you but remember that consistency and persistence is key.  If you stick with it, it'll get better quickly and it'll be great once it's done.  The middle of the night was the worst part for us but it didn't last long before he was sleeping through the night.  HTH and good luck either way!
