My commute is at least 45 minutes, sometimes an hour or more each way. Should I cart an infant to a daycare close to my work or use one closer to home?
I've got a 30 minute commute and chose one right by work. It was mainly because we liked this center (and it's cheaper than the ones near our house), and I wanted to breastfeed him during the day and go visit. That only lasted a couple of months before he started to get upset when I left after going to visit. But it's still worked out okay for us.
Some days, he's not very happy in the car and it makes for a long ride home. I think when he gets a little older, we might reconsider and have him closer to home.
We have always chosen a center closer to our home. The reason is b/c DH and I both work an hour away in opposite directions so home was more of a central location. Also I prefer my DD to be closer to home and be closer to her Dr and the hospital just in case. It works out well for us b/c one parent drops off and one parent picks up. I'm all about compromise :-)
We contemplated closer to work, but in the end chose closer to home. It's right near where we catch the bus, go to the grocery store, and her doctor's office, too. I just figured if I needed to take DD there while I had a day off (for errands or what not) or if I was really sick, then I wouldn't have to drive her all the way into town and then go back to get her again. Some days I'll just leave her for the morning and to drive 45 minutes without traffic (each way) didn't sound good to me. Plus, it gives me an excuse to leave work on time to go and get her.
Thank you for the responses. I am leaning towards closer to home but thought it would be nice to drop in a breastfeed or just cuddle the baby on my lunch breaks. But I don't want a fussy baby in the car for 2 hours a day either.
We were closer to DH's work until last week. Now, we're closer to home. Closer to home makes pick-up/drop-off easier for me, since I work the opposite direction from home.
Also, what happens if/when you change jobs? Closer to home means you wouldn't have to switch. But if your new employment isn't near your old one, you're hosed.
We are moving, and our commute will be longer, and I am struggling with this too. One thing that I am worried about is traffic. What if I push all day long to get out of work on time, only to get stuck in traffic (accident, snow, etc), and still be late for pick-up at daycare? That would be so frustrating. If we go to a daycare near work, then DS would be in the car with me, and we can just go get dinner somewhere and wait for things to clear.
I would go closer to home so your DH can help with the drop off/pick up (unless you both happen to work in the same area). Plus think about if you ever take a day off work to do some things around the house and want to drop off your LO at daycare still. It would stink to have to drive 2 hours to do that.
Close to home. No need to turn your baby into a tiny commuter. Also, if you ever have to pick up the baby when he/she is sick, it's much better to be closer to home. The daycare can keep the baby comfortable while you get there instead of making him/her sit in the car.

Our situation is exactly the same.
If you choose the daycare closer to your work, you'll likely take the bulk of responsibility for all drop-offs and pick-ups......it's nice being able to share these things with your spouse, especially when your kid gets sent home sick. Also, think about what happens when YOU'RE sick and take a day off work. Do you still want to commute to drop your child off at daycare?
I have a 45min-1hr and 30 min commute... I chose a daycare near home so DH can help, he does drop off and I do pick up. I don't want DS in the car in traffic or when the weather is bad (esp snow storms)
