I just heard a story over the weekend about a family friend getting an IUD put in. After the doctor had put her IUD in, she found out she had been pregnant BEFORE it was placed. And, it was placed OVER the baby. The doctor never did any kind of blood test to make sure she wasn't pregnant. No home test was coming back positive. By the time she figured out what was going on, she was already 12 weeks. She ended up having to terminate because there was no way the baby would survive. Very sad situation. Just wanted to tell anyone who is thinking about getting an IUD to think about getting a blood test first!
Re: PSA: IUD information......sad
That is sad.
My doctor made sure I had a test done at the office before inserting my IUD.
That is horrible. I had mine put in while I was on my period so no worries. Then I had an ultrasound to check placement.
It is standard at my OB's office to have a urine HCG test if you are not on your period at the time of IUD placement or if you have not had one yet.
I didn't have a test first because I was 5 weeks pp and hadn't had sex. Other than in that situation any responsible doctor would do a test first.
That's sad.
I had my period (they wanted me too - something about the location of the cervix) or else they would have done a pregnancy test in the office.
That said, *I* was an IUD baby. My mom got pregnant while she had one (granted, this was 35 years ago, so I'm assuming IUDs are "better" now, since I'm trusting one) - she wasn't pregnant already. They were able to remove it and gave her a shot (which was maybe progesterone) to keep her from contracting and losing the baby. Maybe she/I was lucky. I have no idea.
the OP said there was no blood test, not that there was no pee test. Pee test or insertion during period is SOP, I believe.
Wow.
There are a lot of silly lawsuits out there, but this certainly isn't one of them. I hope she takes him for all he's worth.?
