CD for newborns? What did you do?

Hello!

I bought a stash of prefolds and covers, size small, for my little one on the way. Now I am thinking that if she is not 8 lbs when she is born, I'm going to have to wait because the covers look so big! What did you do? Would it work to use the small pre-fold diapers but invest in some newborn covers? I don't want to use disposables for weeks while i wait for them to fit, but I have no idea how big she'll be so I don't want to blow a bunch of cash on newborn diapers.

TIA!

  • My LO was 4 pounds 14 ounces at birth. We are using preemie sized prefolds from www.moderndiapers.com and preemie sized covers. The covers that work well for us are the prowrap, litewrap and imse vimse. (my favorite one) The thirsties XS covers are just starting to fit her. We also like our XS BG AIO's.

  • DD was 7lbs 2oz at birth. We used the premie prefolds and thirsties xs covers from moderndiapers.com until she was 6-7 weeks old. Once we moved up a size, we were still able to use the xs covers for quite a while.

Selling nb diapers is pretty easy. I sold those pfs and covers right away with no problem.

  • My DD was 5 lbs 2 oz when we came home from the NICU on day 12 and started using cloth. I had newborn sized prowraps that worked perfectly fine with orange edged Green Mountain diaper prefolds (just tri-folded). We also had a few smaller fitteds that fit well (Verybaby newborn fitted, Under the Nile fitted, and a Happy Heiny newborn fitted). Also a Little Bettle size 1 wool cover fit well and is our only cover that works overnight when I'm lucky enough for her to sleep for 5-6 hours. Oh yeah, XS Thirsties AIOs and Sposoeasy AIOs were by far our favorites for the newborn stage. Very daddy and grandma friendly!

Within a few weeks though, she was able to fit in most of the other stuff I had - KL0s (fitting perfect now at about 9 lbs), small Blueberries, XS Thirsties covers and Bummis covers.

  • my dd was 6lb7oz when she was born but dropped to 5lb11oz...we have been using KL0s, infant prefolds and xs thirsties covers.  i also have one nb bummis super brite.  the xs thirsties supposedly fit up to 12 pounds.  dd is about 9.5 lbs now and we are still cinching them almost all the way in the front so i believe it!

you could probably fold over the excess on the prefolds (that's what we do) but it might be easier to go ahead and get some newborn prefolds as well...you could use them as burp cloths later.

  • My LO was 6lbs 11oz and we used orange GMD prefolds, thirsties covers xs, and bummis newborn covers.  Everything worked very well. We also used BG 3.0 at night - for the first month we had a few leaks b/c he was not big enough yet. Now they work perfectly

  • my lo was 7lbs at birth, was down to 6lb 10oz by the time we left hospital, and is now around 7lb 5oz.

we have been using orange edge gmd prefolds and KL0s.

from the start, we used prowraps nb (with cord cutout) and i have 1 bummis nb cover(which I preferred over prowrap). I felt that the thirsties were too big the first week.  now I have been using the xs thirsties covers, which I really like.

  • my DS was 6.8 when we started using XS AIOs (blueberry and BG). ?they worked just fine.
  • We used the xs thirsties for a long time and were definitely worth the investment.   DS is 4 months now and probably over 16 lbs and I just recently packed away the xs covers and moved up to the smalls.

We tried a bummis super brite xs or nb size, whatever it is, and it was too small and never fit. DS was 8 lbs. 5 oz at birth.
