Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Teething...do you really notice that LOs are more cranky?

I just noticed that DS has his first tooth cutting out of his gum right now.  I didn't notice him being too cranky in the past few days but he's been an even worse sleeper than normal and has been tossing and turning from 4am onwards the past few days.  We're about to do Ferber for night wakings and I want to make sure we're not doing it when he's really just bothered by teething.  Also, how long does teething affect babies...in other words, how long are they generally uncomfortable when a tooth is coming in...is it days or weeks?  Thanks!

  • DD woke up last Tuesday with two bottom teeth. My answer to your question is yes...and no? Her night sleeping wasnt really effected by it except for one night. We gave her Infant Motrin. It really helped. But her naps have been all over...We have caught her numerous times rubbing her head on her mattress or the packnplay when she is trying to sleep. Im not sure this would be the right time to do Ferber if your son is really teething. Its really a very tough time for babies and they need extra love and support. DD hasnt been cranky- just a little bit more needy I suppose. This process is on/off and can last months. DD started teething at 3 months and she finally cut her two bottom teeth last week at nearly 8 months. I have heard that now that they are in, it will take a few weeks for them to fully come in. Good luck!

  • So far, DD only has her 2 bottom teeth.  She was pretty needy when she was teething w/ them, especially at the very end.  She just wanted to be held ALL.THE.TIME.  Her night time sleep was not effected though (TG!)

  • Yes!  DS cut his first two bottom teeth a month or two ago, and he was pretty cranky right before they came through.  Then, he spent the last week getting ready to cut a top tooth - it finally broke through on Sunday, and the whole week before it, he slept awful and was beyond cranky.  I was so happy to see that tooth Sunday, let me tell you!
  • Yes and my DD sleeps a lot more while she is teething and drools a lot.

So would you say that it lasts about a week?
  • I have no warning of teeth until the day they come through. She has 2 bottom ones and 4 top ones. I had no idea except for being fussy the actual day they cut through...then it is over.
  • Absolutely.  He sleeps terribly when he's cutting a tooth.

    Consider yourself lucky!
