Success after IF

TTTC Visitor, # of follicle question

First of all I love this board because it gives me so much hope so thank you for being open and always helpful! So this month I'm starting IUI with gonal-f and I'm just curious how many follicles do the doctors like to see when using gonal-f? I only had one with all my clomid cycles so I was just curious if the goal is to have 2 or 3 or more than that, with the hopes of only 1 taking. Thanks in advance!!

Re: TTTC Visitor, # of follicle question

  • i didn't use gonal f but i know that most REs aim for 3-4 follies for an IUI cycle...every doctor is different but generally they don't want to see more than that b/c then you risk HOM (most but not all will cancel a cycle w/more follies unless you are ok with selective reduction).  HTH! good luck!

I did my IUIs with Follistim (same thing pretty much). We always aimed for 2-3 mature follicles, which for my doctor meant 15-16mm or above.  One cycle I had 4 mature and we went ahead with it, but only after I got the talk about the risk of high-order multiples, and I already had four failed IUIs under my belt at that point. The goal was definitely to get pregnant with only one baby, but there is always the risk of multiples when you are aiming sperm at multiple mature follicles.

Sometimes your age will matter--if you're older they might trigger you with more follicles, figuring that some of the eggs won't be good enough quality.

It's definitely both an art and a science! You'll probably get lots of different responses.  Good luck!

After 7 failed IUIs, IVF w/ ICSI worked!!

I am thankful every day for my miracle after infertility.

And thrilled to be pregnant again after FET!

  • I did Follistim, and had 4 mature follicles. I responded much better on Follistim than I did on Femara or Clomid. Good luck to you :)

  • Ditto the PP's, but I also wanted to add that sometimes it can be even fewer. I have PCOS and Clomid never worked to make me ovulate. Since we're both young (I'm 23, DH is 25), and DH had a really good SA, we were going to cancel anything over 2 follicles. It kind of depends on your situation.

I did multiple cycles of clomid w/o response. When I moved to Gonal-f I had 4 mature follies at trigger. We now have healthy twins.

    Good Luck!!!

  • I had b2b IUI with Gonal F and got my BFP with the 1st cycle. I stimmed for 12 days with 300iui, then used Ganirelix for another 5 days. The day of trigger, I had 1 mature follie at 19mm and 2 at 16mm. It worked =)

    Good luck!!!?

  • I had one follie on Clomid. I got pg doing follistim and B2B IUIs. My RE's office goal was 3-4 follies and a singleton pregnancy. My DH and I made it clear we wanted no more than 3 follies. After 3 failed IUIs and 5 surgeries, we agreed to proceed with a cycle when I had 4 follicles. I am now pg with twins.
