3rd Trimester

CD mama's come in please!

Can you share what brand and how many CD's you are using for the newborn stage? I've heard kissaluvs.... just curious.

We are doing the bumgenius 3.0 but I've been warned that they don't work well until baby is more around 10lbs.... so I want to be prepared so we don't have leaks or have to use disposables.

TIA!

Re: CD mama's come in please!

  • 24 orange edge Green Mountain Diapers PFs, 1-2 Thirstied fab fitteds, 1-2 KL0s and 6 NB or XS covers (3 proraps, 2 thirsties and 1 bummis)... and a handful of snappis.

I'm also going to go ahead and get 24 yellow edge GMDs to get me into the next stage too.

  • I have 10 Kissaluv 0s', 3 BG bamboo fitteds, 3 BG AIO's, and will also be ordering 2 dozen orange/newborn Green Mountain Diaper prefolds.

That's for the first few weeks/months (newborn stage) and then I hope to move up to the BG one size pockets (like what you're planning) and possibly bigger prefolds/covers to mix in.

Oh, and for covers we'll have 4 XS Thirsties and 1 Bummies, but I am wanting to get at least 1-2 more.

  • I'm using mostly prefolds with covers.  I also have some fitteds and tiny fuzzi-buns pockets.

  • We used prefolds and Thirsties covers for the first 3 months, tried out BG and are now back to the prefolds and Thirsties.  They are just better, IMO.  The BG are nice to have on hand for going out, having a sitter, etc., but you can't beat prefolds.

  • 24 newborn prefolds

    4 wool covers

    a few snappies

36 bumgenious AIO (for when he is bigger)

-I looked at the kissaluvs and decided that since they needed covers anyway, I would just go prefolds for the newborn stage.  Much cheaper.  The wool covers will still be soft and cozy for him.

Bum genius, using chlorine-free disposables until he fits them.
  • I have 24 kissaluvs and about 14 prefolds. ?I read that 32 diapers SHOULD last about 3 days in the NB stage. ?I only have so many Kissaluvs, because I got them used for $5/ each. ?If I hadn't gotten that many, it would have just filled out with prefolds.

I also bought a few different covers to try. ?Thirsties, prowraps and bummies super bright.

I also bought a bumgenius size small to try out, but I have heard some people don't like them, because they take longer to dry, can smell, and the velcro wears out.

  • FYI Green Mountain Diapers sells prefold seconds for CHEAP and I don't see anything wrong with them. ?I got 14 of the orange edge.

    • My stash is as follows
    • 17 Kissaluv fitteds size 0
    • 12 orange edge greenmountain pre-folds
    • 3 Thirsties covers, size x-small
    • 1 pro-wrap classic size newborn
    • 2 Bumkins small covers
    • 3 Thirsties covers, size small
    • 24 chinese infant prefolds
    • 2 drybees bamboo fitted size 1
    • 6 Bumgenius 3.0 all-in-ones
    • 6 thirsties all-in-one (v1 I think) size small
Though I think for the newborn phase all you need is about 24 diapers (to do laundry every couple of days).  Some combo of Kissaluv's and/or greenmountain orange edges, with ~3 to 4 covers.

    This.

We also have Bum Genius 3.0 for when LO gets bigger.

  • As hard as I tried to accept it, I couldn't take on the washing of the cloth diapers ourselves. Plus, we have an old school washing machine that may or may not be able to handle it.

We are using a fantastic, locally owned, and very reasonably priced (still cheaper than disposables) cloth diaper service that will drop off and pick up 70 prefolds/week at first, and the number decreases as the child ages. I'm planning to buy 6 Thirsties covers in each size, as I hear they are the best.

Thanks, I plan to order ours from there next week probably and will look out for some! I bought a lot of seconds at Cottonbabies when I was in St. Louis last month and they were cheap and seem perfectly fine! Love that:)

I have 36 unbleached Indian prefolds and about 5 covers to start out until he fits into the BG 3.0.

  • I have 24 Green Mountain Diaper prefolds, 6 Kissaluvs Size 0, 2 Muttiqin Baby fitteds (because they were too cute to pass up), and 6 BG xsmall AIO's for family members who are "scared" of cloth diapers.

As far as covers, I have 2 x-small thirsties and 3 newborn proraps.

Besides the prefolds, I got all of them used and plan to resell them when she grows out of them to help fund some one size diapers.

  • I had my baby last Friday, and we are using Bum Genius Organic All in One diaper with snaps.  I love them!  We used size 1 disposables while he was in the hospital and for a few days afterwards, because he developed an diaper rash that needed treatment not compatible with cloth.  But, now I wish I would have switched to cloth right away.  The rash went away so much better once he was in cloth and using bamboo wipes with Mustella Stelaprotect no-rinse cleanser.  We lucked into find the Mustella when looking into a solution since he got a rash from the wipes the hospital used and the pampers sensitive wipes we had at home (we had gotten them as a shower gift).

We have 28 cloth diapers and 28 cloth wipes.  I have been able to use the diapers right away, but my baby was also 9lbs 7 oz at birth.

  • We have:

    14 KL0s

    6 infant prefolds

    6 newborn prefolds

    6 infant hemp prefolds

    and 6 homemade pocket diapers

I've also got 2 Bummis Super Whisper Wrap NB covers and 2 Prorap NB covers, 2 Bummis SM covers and 3 Thirsties SM.  I think the NB covers will work fine and the SMs should be good for the smallest settings on our OS diapers.

For after the NB phase we have 4 Bum Genius OS, 4 Happy Heiny OS and 3 Bububebe's.  I want to get a couple Fuzzi Bunz and maybe a Rumparooz OS to try out too to see what works for the LO but that will have to wait.  At this point, minus the additional OS diapers that we will need to add to our stash DH has declared our NB stash done.

  • To be honest, I'm feeling a little overwhelmed about the cloth diapers! We are planning to use the Huggies naturals for the first couple of weeks and then switch to cloth. I have no idea what kind to get. I thought of some prefolds and covers and also getting a few pocket diapers. I know there are cloth inserts too but not sure if you put those inside diapers like gdiapers or if you put them in cloth diapers for extra protection? I think we'll buy a couple of each brand and see what they like the best.

I'm sure cds are just like baby slings- every one has their own preference so you just have to try 'em out and see what works for you :)

  • Thanks for the great info!  Marking for later as I don't have any for the NB stage, but have all of DS's BG 3.0 OS pockets :)
  • I have 30 GMD orange edge and 6 KLOs and 6 NB Blueberry pockets and 6 NB covers to start with. KLOs and the BB pockets are for dh since he has trouble with using a prefold and a snappi. We will probably use those when we are running errands or whatever also.

After the first couple of weeks we have some small g-diapers w/ cloth inserts (we have several different types) and small FBs. We used the g-pants with cloth a few times with ds and it worked well for us before since we travel a lot. I like being able to have the flushies (we don't flush them though) when we are on a road trip or camping. So anyway, we will see how this works with our new girl and go from there.
