Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Transfer from bottle to sippy question.

Today is day two.  I am only offering a bottle before bed. Last night, DS was very wakeful and refused a sippy cup.

DS drank maybe 4- 6 or so ounces of milk from the sippy total throughout the day and 6 ounces before bed.

I am second guessing myself and wondering if I should just go back to the bottles or continue with the sippy cup and hope that starts drinking more soon.

DS is 1 year and 2 weeks old.

Re: Transfer from bottle to sippy question.

  • In my opinion.....don't go back and take away bedtime bottle soon!  DD did the same thing at first.  I was so worried about her milk intake I thought of going back too.  I didn't.  I just offered lots of other things like yogurt, cheese, etc.  Within a week she was downing a sippy of milk quicker then a bottle and we never looked back.

    Good luck!

  • How long did it take you to get rid of the bedtime bottle?
  • I just stopped it.  She didn't seem to notice. She never seemed too attached to it.  I am very lucky.  I know that doesn't always happen.  My mom had the hardest time with me.  I was almost 2 years old and from what she said the longer you wait the harder it is.  She said I would scream I WANT MY BOTTLE and would freak until I got it.

    Good luck!

  • Sorry to butt in, but can you (GabbysMama and AmyGer) tell me how many bottles your kiddos were still taking when you started transitioning?  My 12 month old DD still takes between 4 and 5 bottles per day (6 oz) on top of the food that she eats.  I have no idea how I'm going to wean her!

    Thanks!

  • I am in the same boat as you! i just took away all bottles! I did buy a Nuby bottle like sippy cup. It has a nipple. I am using this in the morning and for the last bottle before bed. All other times he is using the sippy cup. My pedi told me not to worry about how much milk he is getting. It is ok if he is not drinking a normal amount. I have been just offering him more diary items (yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese) This is harder than I thought, but we are doing it!!! I am also thrilled with my new found counter space as I no longer have bottles and?accessories?all over the place!?

  • I don't see what the big rush is at age 1. My pedi told us 15 months. It's a work in progress for us.
