Working Moms

Looks like I'll be a joining the unemployed...

But not by choice.  I'm getting laid off at the end of July.  I am glad I know now and it gives time to start to look for something but I've worked since the day after I turned 16...hard pill to swallow.

I've been with the same company since college graduation so looking for work as an experienced professional is totally new to me...and scary.

We had planned to TTC later this year.  But I know how hard it is to hard a job, even harder when you're pregnant.

Whatever will be will be...

  • Sorry to hear that, but like you said, at least you have some time.

I'm not sure what line of work you're in, but be sure to restructure your resume.  I know straight out of college, my education was close to the top.  Once you have experience, your experience should be at the top and education should move towards the end.  Also, I've found my best positions through people I know, so start working your network!

  • I am sorry you have to deal with this - I hope you are able to find something soon!

  • I'm so sorry to hear this. I've had a lot of friends who've been laid off, but the hopeful news for you is that they all found jobs within 4 months of being laid off.

I would recommend contacting your college's career services office. Most schools offer career services help to all alumni, not just current students. They could help you with a resume review and give you some valuable job search tips that could help since it has been a while for you. Good luck!

  • I'm so sorry to hear that.  Good luck with the job search!
  • I just wanted to share my experience with you.  The same thing happened to me in Feb. I'd been with the company 2+ years and had planned to stay a long time, then they downsized our dept. I had 2 months to find a job and I was very lucky and only had a week between leaving my old co. and starting at the new.

Like the PP said, do research on resume formats.  I had to totally re-vamp mine before I got any calls.  Make your cover letter stand out!!! Once I changed the way I wrote mine, I finally started receiving some interest.  I spent the 2 months I had applying and researching.

Also, take the time to figure out what you want to do.  It is kind of a forced opportunity to do something you enjoy.

I'm sorry this happened to you but good luck!

  • I'm really sorry.  That's awful news.  Hope you find something very soon!
  • Oh no...I am so sorry to hear this.
  • My DH got laid off in Feb. The company went bankrupt and laid off all their employees. The job market is tough, so we decided that he is going to stay-at-home with our daughter. Maybe you can take this opportunity to start your family that you always wanted. Then when your child older (maybe after the first year), you can start looking for a job again and start back to the workforce fresh.
  • I am sorry to hear that, I am sure you will find something.  However if you decide you want to try working from home let me know. I have 2 work from home businesses. I plan on doing them full time once the lil one arrives.

You can contact me at cash4purpose@gmail.com if you would like more information.

    Good Luck
