XP- weaning (bfing) cold turkey

We are weaning this weekend and we're doing it cold turkey.  DS is 18 months old and he's totally fine with it.  He LOVES to nurse, but since I haven't offered it to him he hasn't asked for it and is taking milk and water just fine. I'm really happy that it hasn't been too hard on him.

My concerns are for my breasts.  Can I wean cold turkey?  I'm terrified I'm going to have issues with clogged ducts or an infection.  Will my body be able to do this if I just stop?

Re: XP- weaning (bfing) cold turkey

  • You risk clogged ducts and mastitis if you wean cold turkey.  There is also the possibility of depression or mood swings from the hormonal shift.

I would suggest that you pump at least a few times a day and gradually wean yourself off the pump over the course of a week or two.

  • It could really hurt.  I made this mistake because I just wanted to be done and OUCH!  I would only drop one feeding at a time.  You could pump if you don't want DC breastfeeding.  I'm telling you the pain was intense.  I also took an antihistamne and that helped.  Good luck.
  • DD nursed exclusively till she was 15 months old -- my boobs always had milk, but were never engorged... I stopped cold turkey with her and never had any issues with engorgement, pain or any kind of clogged ducts.  I'm glad that weaning has been pretty easy for him ;-)
  • how many times a day were you nursing?  if just 1-2 you are probably ok.

take some sudafed every 4 hours, and that will help dry you up.  also take some ibuprofin for some of the pain.

I was down to 2 pumping sessions a day and then just stopped.  after 3 days is when i was sore.  and I started leaking around 7-8 days.  then i started sudafed every 4 hours and I finally went dry.

  • It was really very painful for me.  And I was only bfing once or twice a day.  I tried advil, sudafed, cabbage, etc, etc, etc.  The only thing that finally ended working was sage extract and pumping a little bit.  GL!
  • thanks everyone! it's been about 60 hrs since I last breastfed him and I'm doing ok.  I've hand expressed in the shower a few times and I was a little worried about my right breast yesterday, but it's better now.  I hope it continues this way.

I had the same experience, although I just weanted Maliyah the past few days (so 11 months) and had no issues with going cold turkey.  I didn't plan to just stop, but I was going to hold out until she wanted to BF, but she never cued me, so I never offered.  Anyway - no issues at all.
