Anyone have BH contractions at 18 wks?

Last night I had what I think was my 1st Braxton Hicks contraction. I felt a really strong pain that lasted 5 minutes and felt like a really bad cramp or a stitch. I could barely breath and it felt like my uterus was contracting (even though I haven't felt that sensation before so I didn't really know what to think). I drank some water and laid down, and it went after 5 mins.

I was worried because I am only 18 weeks and I didn't think BH started til around 24 wks. After googling around though, it seems like it was an early BH.?

?Did?anyone else been get them this early? If so, how often do they occur for you.

Thanks.?

  • I think I have had them but no pain was associated with them. I just felt Pressure and tightening for like 5 seconds.  I started at like 17 weeks.  I did not think they were painful.  A  lot of girls told me they could start at 6 weeks but not be felt.  I will ask my Dr tomorrow.  You may have been feeling RLP.

  • That exact same thing happened to me at around 18 weeks, too. It was the middle of the night and I got up to pee. When I got back in bed I had definite contractions, and they were painful. I've had contractions before, so I know what they feel like. But they were irregular and didn't get close together, so they weren't TRUE contractions, just painful BH. I called my midwife and she scheduled me an ultrasound in the morning, where they could see that my uterus was contracting, and I was still in pain. Apparently some women are really sensitive to BH, even though BH are normally painless for most women. I would recommend going to see your doctor to make sure everything is okay, but keep in mind that this may be normal for your particular body.
  • I had BH starting around 20wks, but they feel nothing like that. It is a tightening (I first thought the baby was rolling around) and only lasts about 20-30 seconds. For me, they were not at all painful at that time. It is probably something else, like RLP or your ute stretching. BH shouldn't last a full 5 minutes I don't think. Call your doc if it happens again.
  • BH actually start occuring in the first few weeks of being pregnant- most people do not feel them until much much later though.  I have been feeling them since around 20 weeks though they are still rare.

A suggestion is to drink more water- being even a slight bit dehydrated will make them come more often/more noticeable.

To add to that- they should not be painful.  What you had may be BH but also sounded alot like what my Round Ligament Pain felt like at 18 weeks.   If you are worried always call your Dr.

  • I googled round ligament pain - It said it should only last a few seconds so now I'm wondering what this was (since BH aren't supposed to be painful).

I feel fine now so and also it's 4th July so I'm not sure if someone will be answering the phone at the doctors office.. Since I feel fine now I think I'll just let it go and then call on Monday.. or does anyone think I should definitely try and get ahold of the doctor?

    Thanks.?

  • To add... I think I was slightly dehydrated yesterday so that could have brought whatever it was on.

I am sure that the dehydration didnt help.  My RL did last for awhile depending on my position- when I am on walks or working out it was always a longer pain.  Have a good weekend and hope the Dr. lets you know Mon that all is well!

I'm not sure exactly what you felt, so I'll give you description of BH feels like for me (and has felt sinces around week 13/14).    My uterus tightens up so that it feels like a rock, sometimes it occurs with a cramp, and sometimes the sensation takes my breath away.   It's VERY uncomfortable and now that I'm further along - it's hard to walk straight when they happen.    Was what you felt a sharp pain?    It might be BH, RLP, or something else.   If you are feeling fine now, ask your Dr. at your next appointment or call after the weekend:)
