I'm weaning from pumping already... happy & sad

I really wanted to do it for at least 2 months- b/c that is how long I pumped for Griffin- but it's just too time consuming - with 2 babies and a toddler- time is rare now.... and DH goes back to work in a week- so I want to be done by then.

I'm sad I didn't make it to 2 months and sad that this is the last time I'll be pumping/nursing, etc. (we're done having kids now).

I'm trying to look at the positive- and how much more time I'll have, how much easier it will be to plan my day, leave the house, etc... How I can take any meds I need for migraines, etc.... how I don't have to worry about the foods I eat giving the babies gas....

but it still is making me sad. :(

I dropped a session today... and will slowly drop them until I'm done- hopefully by next weekend.  It's time for painful boobies! ugh!

  • Good luck.  I'm still at it at 3.5 weeks but am only having enough milk for one exclusively.  Now that Jake came home from the NICU today, he still needs it more.  I'm hoping to make it to 2 or 3 months but we'll see.  What kind of formula will you be using for your boys?

Sam is on Similac Advance but I feel like he's reall gassy and I may need to switch him.

  • Be proud of what you've done for your little guys-it's tough to pump for one, let alone two!  I pumped for about 4 months for my guys, and, ironically, it was the most I've pumped for all my kids.  I think being locked in the house during the cold weather helped-but my other two got, at most, two to three weeks of BM, between them both.  I say enjoy your babies, your toddler, the nice weather, and hurrah to you for pumping what you did!

they are both on Enfamil already - they get maybe 2/3 BM and 1/3 formula now.... they are pretty gassy - so once i'm done pumping i'm going to see how they do and if they continue to be gassy I will try another formula - but for now- it could be my BM causing the gas, so i"m waiting to change.

When I weaned Griffin from BM his reflux actually got better - so somethign i was eating caused him problems.

  • I know how you feel. I had to stop BFing Zach b/c it was to hard with the twins..?

  • Goodluck.  I can't wait to be done pumping.  It's so time consuming and I find it stressful to find the time to pump.  I feel like all I think about is should I do it now while they are sleeping, but it's an hour early, etc.  It really does consume alot of my thoughts.  I'm not sure when I'll stop, but I'm down to 5-6 pumps/day.  Honestly one reason I'm not stopping is I don't want to deal with painful boobies.  I get plugged ducts as it is.  I know the boys won't be getting breastmilk anymore, but I can't imagine pumping with a toddler.  Props to you.

  • Well, congrats for making it as long as you did!  Some people don't even try with multiples, so good for you!  I felt the same way when I stopped nursing (I never really pumped - never had the time!) - we are done with having kids too.  But, I have a nasty cold right now, so I'm glad I can take some Nyquil and get some rest!  Feel better and good luck with weaning!
  • My boys have been on BM only since they were born.  It's so hard to find time to pump and I don't have a toddler as well!  My supply seems to be dropping all of a sudden so they might be forced onto formula.  I was hoping to at least keep them on some BM through the winter for the immunity, but I don't know if I can do that for 2 babies.

Kudos for giving it a shot.  Everyone that hears I'm trying to EBF twins is amazed.  I know a lot of people with singletons that have problems, so at least you got some accomplished.

Good luck with the pain!  Hopefully it won't last too long!

  • Congrats on making it as long as you have!  I last bf my girls the day of their 1 month appt...like you I found it was just taking too much time with bfing & pumping...we only ever did 50% bf &50% formula....good luck!
  • Great job for making it as far as you did!  You are doing a great job!  I have been pretty much EBFing my babies since birth...except for occasional formula here and there when we are out and I haven't had time to pump.  I do feel like bfing and pumping take a lot of time and I often wonder how different things would be if I wasn't breastfeeding and pumping for them.  I feel like I would have so much more time.  I go back to work in about a month, so I plan to keep this up until then, and then see what happens.  But I have a feeling that it won't last long once I'm back to work.  I just don't think I'll have enough time to pump at work as much as I need to to keep my supply up.  I do have 40 oz frozen as of now, so I'm trying to build up a supply to help with going back to work.  I'm also terrified of the pain that comes along with weaning...I have blocked ducts now...I can't even imagine how bad it will get with constantly engorged breasts.  Indifferent
  • Gold ... me n you are in the same boat and our babies are almost the same age!

I wanted to pump till 6 months  but I can't keep up with the demand and they don't give any time during the day to pump! Glad to know I'm not alone!

We are using Similac Advanced .... but DD keeps spitting it up no matter what we give her ...

That's about how long I made it as well. Despite the horrible guilt I felt we were all much happier when I stopped and had more time to enjoy my babies!!

  • I totally understand how you feel!  I am having major supply issues (I had them with DD as well) and I've been almost exclusively pumping.  It is VERY hard and I also feel sad that this is my last pumping/nursing ever, etc.  I don't mean to sound happy that you are quitting soon...but I am just glad to know that someone is in the same boat as me.  Hope all is going well otherwise! :)
