Finding a job at 5 months pregnant realistic?

A week after I was laid off of work I learned I was prego. I've been looking for a job ever since, but Oregon has one of the lowest unemployment rate right now...I have a bachelors in communication but no real experience and haven't got a real job since graduating. Should I continue to look for a job now that I'm 5 months or do you think its a waste of time?  Should I wait until after baby is born?

Thanks for you input!

Re: Finding a job at 5 months pregnant realistic?

  • I've been wanting to find a PT job for a little extra money, but it doesn't seem realistic to me. I'm just going to wait until we move (which has a high rate of employment) and get my degree before trying to get a job.

Sorry I can't be more help to you. You could always try, but I don't know how many employers are going to hire a pregnant woman for just a few months...

  • If you need the money, then why not keep looking? You would be able to work for at least 3-4 months and be able to make/save a lot. It's illegal to discriminate b/c of pregnancy. Remember, you probably won't be able to keep your job if you plan on taking time off after the birth, since FMLA only covers employees who have been working 12 months.
  • I think it would be really hard, but not absolutely impossible. I'd think you have to really stress your loyalty and how you're going to be as an employee after the baby is born.

I am planning on leaving my job with the start of my maternity leave and will be looking for a new job during that time or right after, because of the pregnancy issue.

  • I say keep looking.

One of my friends was able to secure a job at 6 months pregnant. They are putting her through all her training now and letting her get a project that's wrapping up. She'll do some light work and then officially take her position after maternity leave is over.

BUT do to how long she's been with the company she's not getting a normal paid maternity leave.

  • Keep trying if that is what you want to do.  If interested in working from home and making some extra money contact me. I have 2 businesses from home and work full time.  I plan or only doing the work from home after the baby is born in the winter.

You can email me at cash4purpose@gmail.com for more information.  I don't want to go against the board's rules of spaming.

    Good Luck

  • While it's not legal for them to not give you a job because you're pregnant, a lot of placeswill find other reasons since you'll be off for a while after the baby is born.  It sucks.  I'd continue looking because there are some people out there who will look at your skills and abilities rather than your belly.

Second thing-I have a degree in communications as well, and I have yet to find a job in the field I want.  It sucks.  I worked in a church for three and a half years, then had my DD, and haven't gone back into the work force since.  I'm hoping to get into it when my kids are all in school.

  • I think it'll be hard to find a permanent job right now... but hopefully you can find at least something for the next few months.  Have you tried any temp agencies??  If you could get a temp job somewhere that you might possibly want to work permanently, then it's always a possibility that you could get in somewhere and knock their socks off... and have them come looking for you after baby is born.

    Good Luck!

  • It would be discrimination if they didn't hire you, but I'm sure some of them get away with it anyway with a simple excuse of "oh she just wasn't what we were looking for".

I say try anyway, at least you will have put in the effort of trying, nothing wrong with that.

  • During my last pregnancy, I was actually offered a job I hadn't even applied for--I had been doing some occasional contract work for their organization and they offered me a full-time job--when I was about 5 months pregnant, so I guess anything is possible, but I probably wouldn't look really hard.  I think I'd temp if I needed the income.

  • I did it before (last pregnancy).  I say keep trying, it won't hurt.
  • I managed to find a job at 5 months! It CAN happen!

Look through a temp agency. At least you might be able to find something up until the baby's due!! =) Then you can start looking for after the baby is born.
