What Would You Do?

So I just recently (in the past few weeks) found out that we are expecting another baby.  I have been staying at home with DD since January b/c my previous company closed and we were all laid off.  Now there is an opportunity to work for a similar company nearby and I have an interview next week.  I REALLY want the job (and to go back to work) but I'm not sure what to say, if anything, to the hiring manager about the pregnancy.  Any thoughts?  I feel like I'm in a sticky situation.

Re: What Would You Do?

  • Don't say anything until you start...the exception would be if there is some huge deadline right around your due date that they are specifically hiring your for, etc.  It's early, and you have plenty of time to prove your worth before maternity leave.

The issue will be what sort of leave you'll get since you won't have worked a full 12 months first, but you can cross that bridge later.

    Good luck!

  • I was 17 weeks when I was offered my current job and I told my hiring manager the day she offered me the job.  Along with telling her I was pregnant I also told her my plan to only take 6-8 weeks off depending on how I give birth.  She was perfectly fine with this and I think it helps to be up front and honest if you can be.

    Good Luck!

  • they legally cannot consider whether you are pregnant/have kids in making a hiring decision so it is best to not even give them that information prior to accepting an offer.

i agree with PP, however, that you should tell them if there is a specific deadline they were hiring you for that was right around your due date. other than that, mums the word!

  • I was hired at 5 months pg by my current employer.  I did not tell them until the end, when I was offered the position.  However, I did tell them BEFORE any paperwork was signed.  They didn't bat an eyelash and gave me PAID maternity leave ON TOP of the usual pto.  Awesome.  If they want you, they will want you regardless.

Edited to add: I did tell them my plan, and I actually worked from home after 4 weeks, and returned to work after 6 weeks...and I had a CS.  GL!

Ditto.  Ever though it's illegal for them to consider your PG when offering you the position, IMO it reflects badly on you for not giving them the info up front.

  • Thanks ladies!  I really appreciate the advice.  I really want to do what's best for me AND for the employer (shoudl I get the position).  Thanks again for your advice!
