prefolds-do you agree with my DH?

i'm ordering a set of PF and covers in the next size for DD.

generally we trifold the newborn PF and slip it in a Thirsties cover.  DH thinks that this will work for the bigger sized covers.

does anyone know from experience?  i'm going to order 12 medium sized just because there are times i like to wrap her with the snappi and not worry about the cover, but it seems like he has a valid point.  there are times the NB PF peeks out of the cover now...

 thanks ladies!!!

(ps i told him i was going to ask you girls and he said "of course they are going to tell you to buy more." i said you guys aren't tied in with GMD-your moms! but he insists people who sell diapers log in here to persuade moms to buy more.  oh my sweet conspiracy theory freak of a husband.

  • If you actually do use the snappy and go coverless, then I would get 6 med/premiums.  Otherwise, splurge on cute covers instead.

    Like Olive Jane's on etsy.

  • Newborn prefold trifolded inside a thirsties or Imse Vimse cover is my DH's favorite diaper - even over AIOs!  Right now we have and use a small Thirsties and IV and 2 Medium IVs.  Honestly, the medium IVs seem like they're hard to get a snug fit around her legs sometimes still at 16 lbs.  I haven't purchased a medium Thirsties yet, but you might want to buy one and see how you like it.  I hear they're pretty roomy at first and in the case of a loose prefold hanging out in there...a snugger fitting cover might be less disastrous!  LOL!  I think you'll be able to use it either way.  But I don't know how big your LO is.

  • thanks jenni-you are like the goddess of EFF. :-) i bop on and off the board but you're always so helpful.  and whenever i see jennigirl i think of the siggy with the adorable crocheted (sp?) dress.

  • Oh good Lord, I was so confused.  You are talking about medium PREFOLDS not COVERS!  Haha!  I found some medium prefolds on Spots that had been shortened int length and I LOVE them!  Definitely recommend the shorter length as I have some mediums PFs that haven't been shortened and they seem to have miles of extra fabric.  The shortened ones fit her perfectly.

    I'm far from a goddess.  :)

I do however like to splurge on the pretty stuff!

  • I prefer the extra length in the PF because DS has days where he pees so much.  Especially now in the summer when he's drinking a lot of water to compensate for the heat (and salt we've been eating because of my morning sickness).

thanks! :-)  DH has a coworker who buys one sized PF and just folds them to fit-but i think i'm too lazy or not as artistic :-p  have you ever tried GMD PF?  i tried some from 2 other websites that aren't nearly as absorbent!

love LoVe LOVE your DD's pigtails!!!  my DD is tiny-9lbs at 10 weeks and has a baby mullet going on-old man receding hairline in the front but party in the back!

LOL!  DD actually has quite a mullet herself.  It's so long in the back that it's a bit out of proportion to the rest of her hair, but I refuse to cut it!  :o)

I haven't tried GMD prefolds that I know of.  My newborn PFs are from Jillians' Drawers and I have no idea what brand the shortened mediums from spots are.  It looks to me like the previous owner just surged them down to a length about an inch or so longer than an infant prefold.  It's nice because it gives alot more room around her waist to use the snappi, but I don't have a big flop of fabric left over.  It's also the perfect lenght to trifold and stuff in a OS pocket diaper like the BG 3.0.  I'm really pleased with them.  If you can find a steal on some used prefolds and know anyone with a serger you'd have a quick job on your hands.  I guess the extra fabric isn't that big of a deal, but I like a trim look.

At 9 lbs though you may not need a bigger size for awhile.  I didn't start using the larger pfs untill DD was at least 14 lbs.
