DH seems to have eczema (my friend with eczema checked and she agrees). I have been doing a little research and it seems that a majority of babies with eczema have asthma or allergies (food, dander, dust, etc.). I'm going to call the pedi tomorrow to schedule an appointment but thought I would see if anyone here had any advice.
At DS's 4 month appt I showed her the spots on his ankles but she said that since it was only there she didn't think it was eczema but that if it spread she would prescribe a steriod. It has spread to his arms, underarms, and diaper area. Also he has cradle cap (which is a form of eczema). I do not want to put DS on a steriod because I feel there are better options out there. I think that he needs to be tested for allergies. My friend's DS sufferd from it and it was the only outward sign of his dairy allergy-they learned this through allergy tests.
If you LO has allergies did you get them tested? Did the doctor suggest it or did you have to ask? What test did they do? Any other information I could use? TIA
Re: LOs w/ eczema and/or allergies?
They don't really test them under two years.
D has eczema and we just make sure to keep him lotioned up really well, and only use things that have no scent or dye in them. I've heard Aquafor (sp?) works really well.
You might want to also try hypoallergenic formula. It works for some babies.
Also, bifidus probiotics can help.
And, yes...there is a higher occurance of asthma in babies with eczema.
In my case it is not true that they do not test under 2 years of age. Some results may be inconclusive before then, but some are not.
My ds suffered from extremyl bad excema...I mean from his head to his toes...red, flaky, itchy, pussing (is that a word?). After trying other treatments including alimentum our pedi referred us to a pedi allergist.
They gave him a scratch test and it came up positive for milk, so now he is on soy and after about a month he looks like a new man
They also tested him for cats but that was too hard to tell b/c his skin was already red. We have to bring him back at 1 yr of age.
It wouldn't hurt to see an allergist if you really believe it is allergies. GL!
DS is EBF which is why I'm wondering about the dairy allergy. I consume a lot of dairy and I'm wondering if that is contributing to the problem.
I have Aquaphor and I've been using that but so far it's not making a huge difference. The area underneath where the diaper fastens started peeling yesterday.
We use Selsun Blue on his head for the cradle cap and we use Burt's Bees Baby wash for the rest of him. We also use free & clear laundry soap and I don't wear perfume or scented lotion and neither does DH.
I had asthma as a child and DH and I both have allergies so that is why I'm concerned. Guess I'll see what the pedi says tomorrow.
Julia is allergic to Aquaphor because it has traces of lanolin. Common skin irritant.
Cec-did the eczema start out that bad or did it gradually get worse? DS's seems to be spreading. It started on his ankles and then moved to under his arms, then the diaper area and now his wrists. Also the cradle cap is a form of eczema as are diaper rashes-both of which he has.
Also did you pedi refer you to an allergist or did you go on your own? My friend goes to an allergist who is also a pedi allergist but I'm not sure if I would need a referral (I need to check with my insurance on this also).
Ds's excema gradually spread. He also had really bad cradle cap that spread onto his face. From there it spread to his neck and shoulders and just kept going down to his ankles. This was over a couple of months.
We tried everything like you have done...we use free and clear detergent, we tried dove, aveeno, mustela, no soap, no baths, baths every day, vaseline, aquaphor, etc. These were all at recommendation of pedi.
Finally she referred to a pedi allergist, but I think most offices will give you a referral to see a specialist if you ask for it. If you have a hmo, which we do. We actually went to 2 different allergist b/c the first was just a gen'l allergist and I felt they had no clue when it came to kids allergies. Then we saw a children's hospital of phila. allergist and they pretty much solved the problem before the scratch test, but did it just to confirm.
