giving liquid meds tips?

hi ladies...DD has woken up with what appear to be hives the past 2 days.  pedi has suggested benadryl.  she didnt mind the first taste, but now that she knows its gross she wont drink it.  how do you give your DC liquid meds?  my mom also tried a dropper, like for tylenol, but no dice. TIA!

Re: giving liquid meds tips?

  • we use a syringe. did you get the meds from a pharmacy where they can change the flavor??? also, you can also give it to them when they are asleep with a syringe. just did that to ds the other day. he swallowed it just fine and no fighting!

  • Add to the bottle or sippy, we do about an ounce of milk and whatever meds he needs.

  • use the syringe and make sure you are pointing it towards the bottom back of the side of her cheek so she won't gag on the liquid and spit it out. unfortunately, my ped said it sucks, but that's the best way to get it down. we have had to give ds meds twice daily since he was 8 months old this way and for a few months it was a wrestling match! good luck!

  • Every day is a wrestling match to get DD to take her Zyrtec.

I hold her in a modified cradle hold. Her right arm is pinned under my left armpit, I hold her left arm with the my right hand. I keep her legs under my right arm and put the syringe in her left cheek so she can't spit it out. I use my shoulder to keep her from hiding her face from the syringe. I give her a little at a time so she doesn't choke. She has gotten so much better about it recently and doesn't fight anymore after I get the first little bit in. I hate doing it, but it has helped her so much with the itching.

She wouldn't take it mixed into her milk.
