Spelling opinions for Fin(n)ley

Finley/Finnley is on our short-list for our boy.  Most likely we would call him by the nickname "Finn".  So that brings up the question as to whether we should spell his first name with both "n"s or just add it when we spell out the nickname.  Thoughts?

    definitely finley.

i get wanting to use two Ns because finn is spelled with two Ns, but finnley doesn't look right to me.

just go with finley (one N) and use two Ns when spelling finn.  not a big deal.

  • Definitely Finley. I don't see the point of adding an extra letter.
  • I like Finnley, I think it looks more masculine.

  • Prefer one N. ?Two isn't terrible, but one looks best(to me). ?Great name! ?

Finnley because the nickname is Finn not Fin.

Yuck, this is a silly reason and Finnley looks ridiculous. You can certainly shorten Finley or Finlay to Finn. Stick with 1 N.

  • I honestly prefer Finnley.  I don't think it looks ridiculous at all.

  • I can speak from personal experience....we named our DS Finnley.  We put two N's because we knew he would be called Finn for short.  I personally don't understand the "it doesn't look right comment"...doesn't look right compared to what?  It made a lot of sense to me...FINN is short for FINNley.  But, I think it's just however you want to spell it.  I also agree with a pp that Finnley with two n's looks more masculine but others may think that is crazy just like I think others the comment that Finnley with two n's "doesn't look right".  It's just like Sara vs. Sarah.  Either way is it's the same name, just two different spellings.  NEITHER is right or wrong.
  • I get where you're coming from, but the proper spelling is Finley with just one "n".  I don't think it will matter that the nn has two "n's" and the full name only one.

Exactly. Either Finley or Finlay are the traditional spellings. Adding an N is akin to adding y's instead of i's in names to make the unique. Finn as a nn for Finley is not going to confuse people. They aren't going to ask 'Oh, your name is Finn? Is your full name FinNley or Finley?'. Finnley just doesn't look right, to me.
