Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

blood tests?

i have 2 m/c:  one at 6 weeks and one miscarriage found at around 10.5 weeks (last month).

i want to speak with my doctor about getting some bloodwork done to see if what is happening is more than just 'bad luck' which is what i keep hearing from everyone.

what type of tests should i ask for?

 thank you

Re: blood tests?

  • No to crush your hopes but More than likely your doctor will not order any blood work just yet. The medically profession is under the assumption that it takes 3 losses, or a year of unsuccessful trying to say that is something wrong with the mother and not just bad luck. But if you are so luck as to have a doctor who will do any testing ask for test that have to do with clotting since clotting issues are the most common reason for RPL. Other than that I do not know what to ask for. I am sorry for you losses, and I hope you do have a good doctor who will be nice enough to run some test for you.

  • thank you for your post.  yes, i remember my dr. told me usually they wait for 3 to do any testing, but if i wanted to do it after i was fully complete with this last m/c she would sit with me to talk about it.  i hope she is open to the idea.
  • My ob referred me to a reproductive endocrinologist after my two early m/c's.  She said that the ob/gyn field is starting to test after 2, rather than 3. I guess every dr. is different. I think every dr. will test different things depending on your history, but here's a list of bloodwork that me RE did (that I'm waiting for the results from...)

CBC, CMV (IgG & IgM), Cystic Fibrosis, HBsAg, HCV core antibody, HIV 1 & 2, HTLV 1/2, Prolactin, Rubella, RPR, TSH, Day 3 hormone levels (Estradiol, LH, FSH, Progesterone), mycoplasma, MYFHR (one blood clotting test), and karyotype. A lot of these tests are for some basic things. You can google then to find out what they test for. Additionally, she tested for Chlamydia, CG, & insulin resistance. I'm also going for a saline sonogram on Monday to look for any structural abnormalities in my uterus. This was the basic stuff that she wanted to do (my RE that is...) that are all non-invasive. My feeling is that if there's something as simple as taking a pill to reduce my risk of another m/c, then it's something easy that I can do.

    Best of luck to you!

  • My doctor will not do anything until after 3 m/c. Its sad but thats their protocol and I think most doctors are that way. I dont know why they call it bad luck or a fluke of nature. It sucks.

This!!! And GL to you.  My dr. is doing it after my 2 m/c so it really depends on the dr.
