Name Spelling Question...

So - DH and I both agreed on the name "Elise" for Caroline's middle name.  No family ties or anything, we just both like it.  As you can see, my name is very uniquely spelled and was misspelled my entire life!  lol.  We don't want this to happen to her, even though it's just her middle name and probably won't be used very often.  Which way is the "common" spelling...?

1.  Elise

2.  Elyse

DH likes it with the Y...but I like it with the I, but we both agree that the common spelling will be the one we go with.  So which one is the most common spelling?

I think the "i" is the typical spelling that I've seen.

  • My middle name is Elyse.
  • My friend used the i and I think that is more common.....

I've always seen it with the "I".

  • I am not usually a fan of the Y in place of an I but I do like it for that name. I think Elise might be more common but I like Elyse better.

  • Elise.

This is also what Dh and I are probably going to go with for her MN. I love it!

  • I think Elise is the more traditional spelling of it.  Everyone I know with that name that is over the age of 5 is spelled with an I.  I've only seen the spelling with the Y in the last few years.
  • I've always seen it spelled with an "i."  And Caroline Elise is my best friend since childhood's name!

  • I think the "i" is the most common, but I really like the Y!!!

  • SIL is Elyse
  • My SIL and one of my friend's are both Elise, which is how I would probably spell it.

Though I think I remember seeing a Graco line that is Elyse.

  • My daughter's middle name will also be Elyse. That is how we are spelling it. Although it is a family name so that is why we are sticking with the y.

  • Elise!

I can relate with never getting your name spelled right...my name is spell Kari..

  • Elise is the traditional spelling (i.e., more common).

  • I have only ever seen it with an "i"... that is the traditional spelling.

Well not you can say you have.  I'm almost 26 and it's spelled with a Y :)

  • I don't dislike either spelling, just for the record!  I just like the "i" better because it's the spelling I've seen my whole life and I REALLY don't want her name to be misspelled all the time.  That was SO annoying.  In HS when I graduated, I got monogrammed items spelled "Kaci" or "Kasey" because the church bulletin spelled my name wrong.  SO annoying.

you can type in both names and see tat both are commonly used, but Elise seems to be more popular.

I don't find Elyse offensive at all, though, the way I do with some alternate spellings.?

  • "i" is the traditional spelling, but I think you should go with whichever you both agree on.
  • When I hear the name, I mentally spell it with an "i", but I agree with PP's that either would really be accceptable, it's not a big leap at all.

And not that people will be seeing/saying the mn all that often but Elyse *could* be mispronounced like Eh-Lice.

My best friend's name is Elyse, and she is also over the age of 5 (she's 28). She's the only person I know with that name, so I would have said that the Y is the more common way. I think either way it will be pronounced right, which is more important than anything (coming from someone whose name NEVER gets pronounced right!).

  • Elise is the traditional spelling, however I like Elyse just as well.  I don't think it's a big deal if there are spelling issues, it is her middle name.  Go with whichever spelling you like better.

Honestly, I like the spelling of your name better than the traditional spelling as well.

If you go to the social security administration website you can type in both spellings and see where they rank!

  • I think Elyse is more common and prettier.  It is my cousins name (she is 25) and I don't think she has a problem with people misspelling it.
