Mix Apple Juice with Formula? Help!

So apparently my LO is constipated.  He's still pooping, but his face turns reddish-purple when trying to get it out and the poop comes out in little balls.  Anyway, I bought apple juice to help things along for him.  I mixed .5 oz of juice with .5 oz of water this afternoon, but I'm wondering if I can just add some to his regular bottle so we're not throwing an extra "feeding" into his schedule.  Anyone with experience here?  Thanks!

  • I did the same thing that you are doing, the 50/50 juice and water.  I have seen people reccommend putting a tablespoon of juice into formula bottle.  I haven't tried it so I can't tell you if it works or not.  But the 50/50 juice mixture worked for us.  All it took was two bottles (one each day for two days) and on the second night he was pooping normal.  It didn't mess with DS's feeding schedule at all.  But he is a chunker and not much will stop him from eating.

  • Did the pedi tell you to do this? I've never head of giving juice to a baby as young as yours -- or water either for that matter.

If he is truely constipated they may give him a sopository to help move things along.

FWIW I was always told to give my oldest prune juice, never apple.

  • Yes, you can add it to his bottles... though sometimes they don't want you to do that because they get less formula that way... as in the juice replaces what should be formula.  DS always ate way more than he should have so if he got a couple ounces less per day, it was no big deal.  BTW, apple never worked for us, only prune did.

  • I've always done it seperatly.  Will 1 oz through him off schedule? It has never bothered DD.

  • We actually used the apple-pear juice but pedi said apple, pear or prune would work.  But we only did this one time so I am not an expert at all!
  • Thanks everyone!  I was told that apple and prune both work, so I went with apple since I can buy it in 6 oz containers.  I didn't want to be throwing away prune juice that he can't go through fast enough (and God knows I won't be drinking it!).  Plus I can leave a little bottle at the sitter's too.  And I don't know if the 1 oz will throw off his schedule - I guess we'll just wait and see.
  • my pedi and the visiting nurse that comes once a week both recommend a tablespoon of prune juice added to a bottle of milk or formula to help with constipation.

they said only use if DS has not had a BM in day or 2 or looks like he is in pain while pooping.
