xp ? about NIP and older kid

so lately I've been feeling trapped at home. I would love to go out but ds#2 eats every three hours so I feel like make a trip anywhere is hard for several reasons 1.) I've never really NIP (which I think once I do it I'll be okay w/ it) and 2.) not sure what to do w/ ds#1 while nursing I just know he won't sit still that long and I can't be chasing him around while trying to feed ds#2. so my question is what do you do w you older child while NIP so that they stay put? other than strapping him in a stroller (which would ensite a tatrum) I'm not sure to do. I could try brining him a snack but if he finishes 1st them he'll be up and running around anyway. TIA

  • Two good suggestions: The play area at the mall.  Most are confined with only one spot to enter/exit.  I let DD run around while I feed DS.

The other thing is to get the older child a special snack.  Have them sit and eat it while you nurse.

Get a hooter hider (bebe au lait) - they are amazing and help tremediously with being able to nurse in public!

  • I second the hotter hider. I did not have one with DS but this time around I do and I really like it. DD nurses every 1.5-3 hours so I make sure we leave the house right after a feeding so I know I have a chunk of time that she will not have to eat. I nurse DD in the car and DS is either in his carseat or I will take him out and let him sit in the seat next to me. I am also worried about the toddler running around...it will get easier as they get older though (I hope!!)

If I have to go out by myself and bring both boys, I tend to bring a bottle for the baby (pumped or formula).  Once in awhile I will brave nursing while my 2.5 year old is along- typically we are at the mall with the double stroller.  I buy an Auntie Anne's pretzel for him (he LOVES them and they are a special treat) and I feed the baby.  I use a hooter hider, but he is 9 months, so I'm having trouble being as discreet as I'd like b/c he is constantly pulling it up.

  • ditto the others...I try to go somewhere 'contained', bring a snack, and hope for the best.

  • You can find cheaper versions of Hooter Hiders on Etsy (I bought mine from bethlukehart) which will help you feel more comfortable NIP.  Will a dressing room work?  Everyone goes in, use one of the wheel chair accessible ones, give your older child a snack and some toys and sit and nurse.  I guess you might have to worry about him crawling under the door if there's space...but it's a small enough area that you might be able to keep him contained.
