I have heard many things ever since I found out I was pregnant. The main one I am upset about is getting rid of my cats. I have three that Husband and I raised from babies. I can't just kick them out because of a baby they were here first. So do I really have to get rid of them. My husband been cleaning the litter boxes and they are down stairs in the basement. I haven't got any were near the boxes.

Re: Should I really.....
You dont have to get rid of them
just stay away from the boxes (As you have been) and when the baby gets here- monitor your cats behavior and have the door shut to the nursery/ your room so the cat/s can't jump into the crib/bassinett and lay accross baby's face (As cats have a history of doing)
WHAT?!?!?!?!
NO, you do NOT need to get rid of the cats. There are a ton of urban legends, stupid crap like your cats will kill your baby by sucking all its breath out (?). But your cats are not a danger to your baby, just don't let them sleep with him/her. Obviously don't clean the litter box, but you do not have to dump your pets now that you are having a baby. I know hundreds of people who have pets before they have kids and the kids turn out just fine. Actually, I read that people who grow up in a house without animals are more likely to develop allergies later in life because they do not build up an immunity at a young age. I have two cats that in no way shape or form will be leaving my house just because I'm pg. My MIL actually suggested it and I snapped at her, as far as I'm concerned they were my first babies.
Sorry that was a small book but I get really fired up about animals.
First of all, just because you've had your cat for a long time does not mean you are immune- your cat may never have had it (mine haven't). Second, just b/c you get your cats tested and they are negative, doesn't mean they won't get it.
OP- if you tell your dr you have cats they will probably test for your immunity to toxoplasmosis. If you are not immune, just have your husband take care of the litter box. No big deal! I rather enjoy my husband taking over this chore...
?
this?
Just don't go digging around in the litter box. In what world do people think it's ok to give up pets because they are pregnant?
What they all said.
And if these cats have been around for a while and/or they're not your first cats, and you've cleaned the litter box before, you're probably one of the peope who was exposed and is now immune.
Also, your cats will probably stay away from the smelly, loud, hairless cat that has usurped their spot as Primary Attention Whores - because they're cats.
Take a deep breath and go cuddle :-)
This. Well said, Beckman.
I'm sorry but this is NOT TRUE! Especially if they are indoor cats.
Did anyone here about the Kid who got choked by the parents snake yesterday? Everyone was sleeping and the snake got out and they found him wrapped around the kids neck in the morning the child was dead!
I remember thinking I bet a lot of people told the parents to get rid of that snake they didn't and now look. I am not much of an animal person. I am sure cats are a long way from snakes but I would ask your doctor and if he say get rid of even one of them I would. Thats not the popular answer but after hearing that story last night I wouldn't take any chances but as I said before I know nothing about animals.
:blank stare:
You cannot be serious. Did you even read that story? It was an extremely dangerous snake which was not kept in a secured cage (it didn't even have a lock). Cats are perfectly safe, and whoever told her to get rid of hers had some bad information. I hope you don't have any pets
clearly. domestic cats are not even in the same category as large pythons.
I've never tested it, but I don't think my cats have the ability to crush someone's neck. One of them is too fat to even try.
Whoever told you have to get rid of your cats is an idiot. Just stay away from their litterbox and wash you hands with soap and water after petting them.

This is ridiculous. You are right, you know nothing about animals.
Re: toxo. I have been around cats and cat poop and dirt my entire life, I literally grew up with a cat sleeping in my crib with me. They tested me for toxo and I was shocked that I was negative. I was sure I'd already have it. But just have someone else change the litter box (or make sure to wash your hands if you have to) and you'll be FINE! If they are and always have been indoor cats, your risk is also smaller (but definitely not non-existent). Do not get rid of them
1st - I said "probably"
2nd - we don't know if she has indoor cats
3rd - it's what all of my vets (and I have friends who are vets in addition to the ones I take my cats to) and my doctors have said.
The bottom line is that ditching the cats because she's knocked up is an overreaction. And it's mean to her kitties!
I agree with the last line, but what is the purpose of telling someone they are "probably" immune? First of all with indoor cats, that isn't true. With outdoor cats they probably are, but not definitely so you shouldn't take any chances. So to say "don't worry you're probably immune"...no. Stay away from the cat box unless you KNOW you are immune
Just an idea for keeping the cats out of the crib (I heard this and thought, I've got to do that!)...
?Before LO is born, fill the crib full of balloons, if the cats try to jump in the crib the balloons will pop, and more than likely they won't be back for a second time around!?
You do NOT need to get rid of your cat.
I seriously hope you're joking....
Or close the door.
you know, i woke up in the middle of the night last night and found my boxer standing over me with a butcher knife.
guess i should have listened to all those people who told me to get rid of my dog.
damn.
This. Please don't go around alarming people into making their pets homeless because of this story. Read some news stories about this snake...it's not like the kid's pet snake had a freak accident. This was a snake they never should have had, was not registered and authorities are considering if they will charge the parents with child endangerment because it was not your average pet snake.
Next on CNN: Cats that choke their owners for making them pee in a box.
the f*ck???
This is one of the stupidest, most knee-jerk things I've ever read on here. Are you seriously comparing a dangerous need-a-permit-to-own-one SNAKE to a housecat?
Look, if you don't know what you're talking about (which you clearly don't) please don't give your useless advice that could result in three cats losing their home and possibly their lives.
You're a special type of moron, aren't you?
