Northern California Babies

Kaiser Newborn Coverage Question

My DH and I both have Kaiser through our employer. Once the babe arrives we are not adding him to our group plan because it's much cheaper (over $300 a month) to sign him for an individual plan.

I called member services at Kaiser and they told me that the baby is covered under my plan for his birth month.  She clarified that to mean that if he is born July 31st then he is only covered July 31st and as of August 1st he would need to be under his own plan because August is no longer his birth month.  In order to sign him up for an individual plan effective August 1st we would have to fill out the paperwork by July 23rd which we couldn't do because he wouldn't be born yet.  This would mean he would be uninsured until August 15th.  This doesn't seem right to me.

Does anyone have any insight into this?

Re: Kaiser Newborn Coverage Question

  • VERY weird Lesley.  As you know I'm not with Kaiser but FWIW Cavin was covered for 30 days.  In other words, I had 30 days from his birth to add him to our plan.

Hope someone here is able to get you more specific info re: Kaiser.

  • The way they described it to me is that the baby would be covered for the month following the birthdate. So, if baby was born on July 31st then he would be covered until August 31st. I would visit the member services rep at your medical facility. I always felt like I was getting better service in-person than over the phone.

  • Riley was covered from Dec 7th to Jan 7 so it seems like you have a month not just the month they are born in.

  • Kasier gave me the same song and dance... however, when I spoke with my company HR... they said 30 days.  I'd call your HR person.

  • DS was covered for 30 days from his birth on my plan. He was signed up on his own before that but that is how long they said he was covered.

That's definitely true if we add him to the group plan, however we are not adding him to the group plan.  This is why I'm confused.

This is how I always understood it.  Maybe I'll walk into the Member Services department and ask them. It seems ludicrous to me that he could possibly only be covered one day under my plan and I wouldn't have the opportunity to sign him up for his own plan.

  • Hmmmm, that "birth month" stuff doesn't sound right. When E was born, I had Kaiser and DH was with someone else. We decided before she was born, she would go on DH's plan. E was born on 4/24 and I seem to remember that we were told she'd be covered under my plan for 30 days. I know that she was seen at Kaiser for her 2 week appt and that would have been in May, after her "birth month" according to the service rep you talked to.

I would call back to clarify and cross your fingers that you get someone else and pose the question just as you posed it here. Kaiser certainly doesn't want your baby to go uninsured for any period of time.

  • That doesn't sound right. I was told 30 days.

Perhaps try calling back and see if you get somebody else. I'm sure you'll hear a different answer knowing Kaiser.
  • It's 30 days under your plan, whether you have Kaiser or Blue Cross or whatever. Someone got their info wrong. Even if you aren't putting him on your plan or getting him an individual plan - it's 30 days. I'll bet if you called again someone would give you the correct info.

  • Regardless of your medical provider, the baby is covered for 30 days after birth. That is CA law. This will give you time to decide medical coverage, get a SS number for baby, and set up all legal documents.

Do you know where I can find a link to this CA law?  I've tried googling it but I'm not having much luck.

  • Let me see if I can find it. I remember reading it in my HUGE HR blue binder when I worked for a previous employer.
