How much do you guys spend...

When you go to friends baby showers?

I have three this month! Yikes. The one is one of my best friends and I am spending a little more and getting a bouncer she wants. The other two showers are friends I have known since grade school and we still chat, we just don't really hang out as often. Most of our catch-ups are through FB or email. I am thinking $25 to $30 is a reasonable amount for them or maybe I am way off. What do you guys usually spend?

  • I know this is awful, but I usually go off what they've spent on me in the past. I thikn $25 or $30 is totally reasonable. I would only spend more on a really close friend or someone who has bought me a more expensive gift in the past.

  • I normally spend around $25.

  • Sounds perfectly fine to me. I may spend more on a close friend, but $25 is enough for someone you don't consider to be really close.

I've only gone to one baby shower so I don't know if I'll be much help.

When a close friend has a baby, I'll spend $50 for a gift.  If it's an aquaintance I'll spend maybe $15-20.

  • I spend what I can afford at any given time. It has little to do with how much I love the person. It's about quality, not quantity.

  • That sounds about ok, as we all know baby stuff can get expensive. Maybe just get them a gc to BRU or something. If they are just FB friends I wouldn't worry too much.
  • It depends on how close I am to the person. Usually anywhere from $25-$50...$50+ if it's my best friend or something like that.

  • Well I am glad that everyone seems to be on the same page as me. With three this month I was starting to panic as we are also getting stuff for our little guy!
  • It really depends who it is for.  Good friend $50 to 75.  Just a friend around $30 to 40.

Depends on the friend. If we're not that close then $30-$40. If it's a close friend then $75-$100.
  • $30-40.  I also like to split gifts with others so we can get the mom to be a bigger item.

  • I haven't had many to attend... but here's what I've done lately...

Good friend that we hang out with semi-regularly, had twins: $50 (diaper bag filled with an outfit for each baby, Q-tips, tylenol, mylicon, outlet covers, pacis, etc.)

knottie GTG: $25 (a GC and a rattle or teether or something)

friend at school that I haven't hung out with: $10 towards a group gift.

SIL (before I was married, or even engaged) who I'd only met twice at that point: $30

Most people I plan on spending $30-50 based on how close I am to them.  My sister or step sister would be closer to $100.

depends on the person, but usually around $50
  • Depends on how close I am - anywhere from $50-$200
  • It depends on the person. If it's someone I don't hang out with very often and am not emotionally invtested in then about $25-$30. if IT IS a long time, good close friend (even if I don't see them often) I will spend probably aruond $50. I more look for something I want to get them (from registry or not etc) and focus on what it is vs the price at that point.
  • Usually $50, more for a good friend or someone in the family.
  • $20-30 for a not so close friend, more for family and close friends.

depends on how much i like/know that person.
  • I've only been to one (other than my own), and it was for SIL. I think we spent around $70 between registered-for gifts and stuff I picked up here and there (books, toys.)?

Just a friend I didn't hang out with much, probably around $30, unless there was something I really wanted to get on the registry that was a little more.?

  • $100 - $200 close friend, 25-50 for not so close.

  • It totally depends on how close I am to the person. I usually spend $50, but if it is a really close friend I'll go $75 to $100. But not too many of my friends have kids, so I don't go to showers very often.

For people I don't know that well, I always buy a small package of diapers and something kind of small off their registry or something I think would be useful to them if they don't have a registry.

    probably $50 or so.
  • It's a case by case deal.

If they're close friends/family I usually don't set a predetermined limit and just buy what I want for them.

If they're just old HS friends or something of the sort it varies anywhere from 30 to 50 bucks.

  • $25-$40 depending on friend. I always get a gift when I visit baby too so it does add up.
  • Depends. If it is one of my very dear friends or close family members, sometimes $80-100. If its a more casual friend, usually $20-30. Spend what you can afford.

  • I think you should spend what ever you feel comfortable spending and can afford.

I'm older (45) and tend to go over board as do my friends.  I had my shower the other day and my girlfriend bought me my Bob Revolution stroller and her mom bought my car seat!  I know we're not typical.  I tend to get really excited for the people I love and spend around $100 - $150 on the shower and then when the baby is born another $100 plus.  I get really excited and I get a lot of joy from it.  I think $30 is more in line with what most people do and even less if money is tight.  You can get a couple of nice outfits for under twenty.  The bottom line is anything you purchase will be appreciated - it's just nice knowing that people care and are happy for you.  It's not the amount you spend.  To put it in perspective if we have a cookie swap I can't just make one cookie - I'll make like ten kinds because I can't decide which one to bring.  I'm nuts!

  • On average $25 - $30 unless they are a really close friend then I usually spend a little bit more

  • I usually spend between $50 and $100 for my friends and family members and maybe $30-$40 for a co-worker or someone I don't know as well.  Spend what you feel comfortable.

  • $25-$50. If it is best friend, around $100.?
  • For not-so-close friends, $25-$30 seems reasonable.  Sometimes I try to get a few small things off their registry and make something (i.e. purchase the bath supplies and make a hooded towel in a print they would like) so there is a personal touch.  I'm sure either way, they will be appreciative of whatever you can give them.
  • Depends on how good of a friend they are and what my finances are like at the time... $20-$100 is the usual range though.
  • Depends on how close the person is.. but from 20 to 50$, and if it is a very good frined or family 80-100$
  • $25-35 is typical for us.

  • I agree with the general opinion on here.  It depends on your relationship with the mom to be.  I aim for $20-$30 for acquaintances and distant relatives, and $50+ for close friends or close relatives. Have fun!
