listen to pedi but research too

I was at the ped today for dd's 15 month check up.  We first met with a student, so fresh out of med school (fresh knowledge?).  One of the questions on her list for this appointment was whether we had turned dd's carseat around now that she's over 20lbs.  I said "no, we're waiting until the max weight limit on the seat of 35lbs".  She said that the gov't guidance was to turn them at 20lbs and after discussing it a bit more was unaware that the guidance was a minimum weight and that it's less impactful in an accident to be rearfacing.

I think this is a cool period of time to be parents because there is so much information available to us.  Obviously you need to take your dr's advice into consideration but things like this just reconfirm my confidence in me knowing what is right for my child and my family.

Or, the rebel in me just gets too much pleasure from questioning "authority". :)

  • UGH!  I think a lot of people don't realize that 20lbs is just the MINIMUM.  I'm glad you made the choice of what is right for your family!  I wish DD was less than 35lbs so she could still be rear facing!

  • what's scarier is how many people she has probably told to turn around and they just listened without knowing.

exactly.  That's why I pulled out my soap box and told her why I she wasn't turned around yet instead of just letting it go in one ear and out the other.

  • I think the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) just changed their recommendation for rear facing from 1 year to 2 years for the minimum age.  If it wasn't them, it was another Pediatric source - I just read it last week but my memory is a bit hazy these days....she obviously wasn't up on that change either.
  • Wow, I'm surprised she didn't know that.  Even if she's fresh out of school, you'd still think she'd be informed about important safety issues.  Good thing you did the research on your own!

  • Wow that is interesting. We went to a Fire Dept car seat check a few weekends ago and they even said the new guidlines from AAP are 2 years old. They said "ask any Pediatric sergeon and they will tell you they would rather see a broken leg to fix than a broken back or neck"

I am surpised that a new Pedi would not know the new guidlines.

  • Wow, that is really shocking that a doctor fresh out of school wouldn't know that. If I were you I would send a note to the medical director of the clinic. It's scary that this doctor could be dishing out this advice to less informed parents.
  • I hope it was her first day of a new rotation in pediatrics, not that it excuses the unsafe info.
