Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

If your LO is in a daycare center, please come in...

Does your center allow for sick/vacation days?

There is a Bright Horizons center right near DH's new job and I called to get info for when we will put Ben in daycare (probably in March).  They said we pay for him whether he's there or not.  I can understand this for days where he may be sick - but no vacation kind of surprised me.  Just wondering what the norm is.  Thanks!

  • My son goes to a Children of America center, and it is the same way.  I think most home daycares are the same.

  • We pay weekly, not daily so if she's sick one or two days, I don't worry about it. However, we do get vacation weeks. Also, I was home for 6 weeks when I broke my foot and we didn't pay for that time either.
  • At my in home center we get 10 days at 50%.

Most of the regular centers give 10 days without having to pay anything. I don't complain because they are so much more expensive than what I pay.

  • Yes, we get 2 weeks of vacation a year. No sick days.
  • DD is at the Y here in RI and we get two weeks free every year, but no sick days...and you have to put in 2 weeks beforehand for your "vacation" time
  • Wow. I wish we had that.

We pay full rate, every week, even with sick days, vacations and holidays. No discount ever, but I imagine that is built into the cost of the weekly rate.

  • we use an in-home, not a center, but its the same policy. We do get one free week. but all holidays, sick days (the DCP or DD) and vacations are all paid in order to hold the spot.
  • We get 5 free vacation days and 3 sick days. I usually end up using them on paid holiday days to the center (like tomorrow). They are closed but we are still supposed to pay for that day, so I just use one of my vacation days and only pay for 4 days instead of the 5.

  • Jack goes to Goddard.

This year, it was pay no matter what.

But for the next school year, they have re-done their policy and you get 1 (maybe 2?) week of vacation you don't have to pay for if you tell them in advance.  No sick days, though.

  • We get 10 vacation days after ds was there for 6 months.  Though....we do pay for many days that the center is closed (tomorrow for example), so we really dont get all 10 days for ourselves.
  • We pay no matter what. Sucks.

  • I guess I am kinda lucky.  Our daycare center lets us have a flex schedule which works out great since I work in the ER and my shifts are different on a weekly basis.  Also we get 2 weeks of vacation I think.  We were lucky to find this place since sometimes DD goes 3 half days a week and sometimes 5 full days all depends.
  • Interesting.

Jack gets two weeks vacation at 1/2 the weekly rate of $235. The vacation weeks have to be taken M-F (no partials), and requested 2 weeks in advance.

No sick days. Are you kidding me?!? They're sick so much while in daycare, they'd never afford to keep the doors open.

  • We pay by the week, same amount no matter if he is out for sickness or vacation.

This is how it is for us too.  Every center I looked at had the same policy, so maybe it's regional.  We pay the same thing every week, regardless of sick days, holidays, or vacation.  But I'm willing to bet if we did get sick or vacation days, or normal weekly rates would be higher.  It's probably all the same in the end.

  • We pay for all sick and vacation days.... kind of stinks to shell out $400 week when DD isn't there but it seems to be that way at all the centers around us.

  • DS is in an in home center and we pay weekly, 52 weeks a year Whether he is there or not, even holidays, sick days, or vacation.  I hate paying for vacation time.

  • We pay whether he is there or not.
  • We pay for all days regardless of my DD's attendence except for holidays when center is closed.  I found in my area that it all factors in the rate kind of the same way.  For example, my sister's day care has so many sick days and vacation days but she pays a higher rate per week than I do.  And she still has to pay for most holidays.  I calculated out the difference and she is actually paying slightly more per week than I am but basically the same.  It is just the way they package it in my opinion.
  • ours doesn't. blech. we pay for the spot, not for every day, if that makes sense.

  • Was the norm for the centers we looked at.  At our center you pay 1/2 week tuition if they are out the full week.  So we've taken vacation before and just  worked it out so she was out the full week so it was cheaper.

As far as I know there is no limit on how many weeks you can take off and only pay 1/2 tuition rate.  I think we did it at least 3 times within the last year.

Ours is the same way.  It is a monthly fee whether she is there or not.  The only time we get a reduced fee is when the center is closed (excluding certain holidays).

  • No.  We pay either way.
  • At our current center we get 10 vacation days a year (we can use them when he's sick or for planned vacation).  The new center we are starting at in July give 5 vacation days per year.  Another center we toured offered 0 vacation days, but gave a 10% discount for sick days.

Bottom line...it's all over the map.

  • We pay for sick days, but get 2 weeks of vacation where we don't pay.

Either way, we pay.  Once you're at the center for a year, you get 1 week vacation.  Otherwise, you pay full price for both sick and vacation time.
  • We use an in home and we pay for every day even if our provider takes a vacation.  She told me I could have 8 weeks off in the summer because I'm a teacher, but then she "suggested" he come two days a week and yesterday I learned that I have to pay for those 2 days/week throughout the 8 "unpaid" weeks even though we'll be on vacation.  But, that's the price we pay to have a provider we trust who cares for our child.
  • Yes. I think most daycares are the same. It's not liek they can fill the spot when you take a vacation day.

    Ditto this.

  • no sick days but we can have up to 2 weeks a year where we pay 1/2 to keep his spot
