I know many of you are familiar with Freecycle. I use it pretty regularly. I love that I can get rid of things and they can go to people who can use them. I don't have to fill up landfills, I don't have to pay to have things hauled away or bother with the selling process. The 'wanted' posts really help me clear out things that have been sitting unused for awhile.
Anyway, I posted a wanted ad yesterday for scrap fabric pieces. I just got my sewing machine and was looking for anyone who wanted to unload some scraps that I could use for practice.
From one of the boards I got an email reply from a moderator who apparently didn't like my post. She said she edited my post and she should have edited my subject line too. She thought 'sewing supplies' was too generic but since I explained in the post it was ok. Here's the part that really annoyed me, "Also, you may use "be blessed" or "God bless" or any short closing, but quotes from scripture is not allowed."
I have had this email address and signature for at least 4 years, been on posting on freecycle just about as long and have never received such a comment. FWIW, my siggy there quotes 2 Cor 9:15 at the bottom. I am assuming that if I quoted some random book that would be ok, but for some reason because it's the bible it's not. I'm all for equal religious rights, etc. I would not be offended if someone quoted the Koran, or wished me a Happy Hanukkah.
I didn't respond, I took a day to think about it. I'm still considering emailing the group owner to let them know I'm offended by this. Do you think it's unnecessary? I reread the guidelines as the moderator suggested and I can't find anything that points to this 'rule'. This warning also counts as my first, so supposedly after two I can be banned from the group.
The other thing I'm considering is removing my sig next time I post and leaving a large bold sig that says "GOD BLESS". Since that was specifically said is allowed.
Re: Is it odd that this really annoys me?
We straddle a county line, so we are on two different Freecycle lists, one for the county we technically live in and one for the county we are really a part of.
One of the moderators is a huge PITA. Nothing is ever the way she wants it and she treats everyone like they are too stupid for explanations. She randomly creates rules and doesn't enforce them on everyone.
I think you have her Windy City sister.
Is there a list of rules like the bump has? If not than this person really has no basis to complain. I'd ask them to clarify the rules of use so that you don't step on anymore toes.
Yeah that would annoy me.
Ok, so she pointed me to look at 'the guidelines'. I've been reading all over the place to try to figure it out. In the rules there is nothing mentioned about religion or scripture. Under 'Etiquette' it states "NO PROSELYTIZING/RELIGION."
So that makes God ok, scripture not? I don't see how one line of scripture is an attempt to convert people?
I'm going to write back. I'm going to state my confusion regarding this rule and add that I am offended.
I was sympathizing with you until this part when it became persecution of Christianity.
Their policies are dumb-- the moderator is annoying.
