Re: do u let your 1 yr old eat fries?

  • Yep.  Even if he didn't need to gain weight, I see nothing wrong with junk food every now and then.

  • The only fries she has eaten are ones that I made and baked in the oven. That was just the other day. No, I don't let her eat fast food or fried fries. Too much fat and sodium IMO.

  • Only once for potato fries, but I let him have sweet potato fries everytime I have them.  YUMMMY!
  • Yes, I have on?occasion. ?No, you are not crazy for not doing the same. Totally a personal parenting call.
  • She looooves fries.

  • Joseph has had fries. He had them by 1yo, but then, he'd been entirely on table food for 5-6m by then.

Are you talking fast-food fries? Like McDonalds or Wendy's or something? Or at home? Joseph has eaten at a lot of restaurants, and at a lot of fast food places, but I usually try to get him the fruit instead of fries, and maybe share one or two of mine. He doesn't really like stuff too crispy, or too salty, so he just prefers to have fruit or veggies.

They're a life saver if we want to actually eat our dinner in a restaurant.  Those thick steak fries are the best.  She can gnaw on those forever.
  • She still doesn't like sweet potato fries but so far those are the only ones I've tried.

DS has had sweet potato fries I make in the oven, they are awesome, btw! He's also had regular 'bad' fries about twice now. I don't think it's a big deal if it's a fairly rare occurrence. But I wouldn't flame someone for letting their DC have more. There are bigger things to worry about, particularly if activity level is high, etc.

  • He's had baked sweet potato "fries" but never any that are actually fried.

ETA: but I have let him have other fried things like fried okra or country fried steak

  • She's tasted fast food fries once or twice and surprisingly she doesn't love them.  I do give her baked potato wedges/fries and baked sweet potato fries about once a week or so.

Agreed! I wouldn't flame you either....unless your DC was 4 months old. That happened w/ my B and SIL's kid.

  • Absolutely!  IMO there is nothing wrong with a little "junk food" once in a while!

he had a couple fries at the zoo for lunch today.    He only gets them once in awhile and we only give him a couple.    If we go out to eat, I ask them to give us veggies instead of fries with the kids meal.   I have never had a problem with this.   We were even at a party that had a plated meal and the kid's meal was grilled cheese and fries.   I asked them to swap the fries with veggies and they did happily.

  • I'm pretty strict with DD's diet. No junk food or sweets. I eat healthy myself and see no benefit in giving her junk food. She's not missing out on anything. As she gets older I know I won't be able to watch everything she eats so why not get her taste buds favoring healthy food now. Just my personal preference. When she's older I won't be giving her junk food but I also won't make a big deal out of the occasional unhealthy food. I want her to have a healthy and guilt free attitude toward food.

  • No, not yet. French fries are definitely in DS's future, but we haven't been in a situation where I wanted to give them to him yet. I do want to try to avoid fast food, however. DH and I recently gave it up, so I'd like to keep it out of DS's diet as long as possible.

  • a friend gave her her 1st one.  she didn't like them all that much....now she loves them.  She's not a super picky eater but not adventurous so as long as she's eating I'm happy.  She doesn't get them that often (maybe 2x/month if that) and it's at a restaurant (not fast food--we don't eat that)

  • I think we waited a little bit longer since DS didn't have any teeth till 14 months. He does have fries now. I am a big fan of moderation. We always try to balance everything out and we only give him a small portion. We don't let me fill himself up on fries.

  • No. I rarely eat them so she never really has the opportunity. It's a personal choice and I choose to not give them to her. ?She can eat them once she is old enough to go get them herself but I am not going to start that bad habit.
  • French fries are only a way of getting ketchup and BBQ sauce in his mouth without getting it on his hands.  he likes to stay clean while eating his condiments.  the soggy fries are then usually tossed to the dog.

    Snort.

And while I'll cop to the fries, I will say Joseph's never had ketchup. I'm not a big label snob, but I do remember from a diet I was on 21,000 diets ago that ketchup is basically tomato-flavored corn syrup.

  • Yep. They're super easy for her to eat, and its not like she eats them at every meal.
  • Sure have...both girls love them.  And if that's what I can get them to eat I'll do it.  Now mind you it's not everyday or even weekly but yes they get fries and chicken nuggets too :)
  • If I make fries at home (oven baked), she'll have a some.  I don't let her eat french fries at a restaurant though.  DH and I rarely order them, so it's not like it's a hard thing to avoid.
  • She's tried them, but she doesn't seem to like them.  She does, however, enjoy the occasional tater tot :)
  • Only here and there.....only the insides of the fries....he hates the feel of them and will not hold them lmao!
  • Yes, he gets them occasionally

You realize that french fries are french fries whether they're ordered from a walk-up counter or from a menu, it's deep fried frozen potato sticks.  Yes, DS gets fries maybe once a month, he loves them. He had some with his Friendly's meal last night.

  • Yup. And no, not all fries are the same. Check out the nutrition facts on McD's fries some time. For one thing, they are not vegetarian. I'm pretty sure they have meat and dairy in them (like hydrolized beef something-or-other for that flavor). When I cut dairy for colic I'm pretty sure they were on my no-no list.

DS has Alexia fries from the grocery store all the time. Just potatoes, organic oil (safflower, maybe?), salt and citric acid. I see nothing wrong with that.
