I am thinking about it. There are a few good places to moonlight in town, and they all pay really well. On the other hand, I feel like I spend so little time with DS as it is, and I hate to be out an evening or weekend that I don't have to.
My SIL is a 3rd year resident & she does not moonlight -- for exactly the reason you describe. She's away from my nephew so much already. Plus her schedule is exhausting enough, why make it worse.
I did not moonlight prior to being on bedrest. There is time for it in our 3rd year, but we usually don't as we enjoy having a bit of our life back more than we like the extra cash. Plus, between my husband and I, we make a decent living. Although now I'll be off work for so long and losing my paycheck, the extra cash wouldn't have been so bad!
I did regular moonlighting prior to having my son. I haven't done any since he's arrived but probably will start back in a few months. I have about 5-6 months of no call this year since it's my last year, so I'll probably do 2-3 shifts each of those months. The shifts available to me most easily are 13 hr overnight shifts. It will suck being away from my son more than I already am, but we really need the money (nannies are expensive!). My husband is a radiology chief and he moonlights a LOT.
I did prior to having children when I was a resident. Even as a full-MD I am always coming across moonlighting/extra stuff but can't part with my weekends.
I think it comes down to how much debt you have - I probably wouldn't if i could swing it without it.
I did moonlight a lot before I was on bedrest, but I haven't done anything since he was born. I figure that I spend enough nights away from him already that I hate to take any more time away.
The money is good though!!!

I don't, but I thought for sure that I would before DS was here. In anesthesia (or at least the programs I'm familiar with) you moonlight in your own hospital by staying late (5-7pm shift) or extra saturday call (7am-5pm). A couple extra hours on the weekday night seems so easy, right? But it's 2 extra hours away from DS, so I couldn't bring myself to do it
Re: residents: do you moonlight?
