Success after IF

Ladies with success after mulitiple failed IVFs

What did you do differently (if anything) on the cycle that worked?

What were the sources of your energy and courage to do one more IVF cycle?

I'm starting BCPs on Friday for our 3rd fresh IVF and I'm needing some encouragement.  I'd love to hear from you what worked and what helped you get through it.  TIA!

Re: Ladies with success after mulitiple failed IVFs

  • I switched clinics. We did estrace prior to stimming, no BCP on an antagonist cycle. The estrace appeared to help egg quality.

I am not sure I had much courage at all, I just knew I could not walk away with out trying everything.  I would regret not doing a third, which we always planned on. It would have been our last one for a very long time, if ever - we had decided after this one to take a year break and test the thought of living child free. I was sort of numb the whole cycle, I was planning a vacation to Europe and looking into donor eggs in the 2ww, everything I could to look forward and not at the moment because the thought of it failing scared me to death. So no courage there, just avoidance!

Sorry I don't have sage wisdom to offer, just a ton of positive vibes and luck!

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I didn't necessarily go to another clinic for my 3rd IVF but I brought the advice from another clinic back to mine and insisted on the 2nd clinics protocol.

The only reason I didn't switch clinics was b/c the 3rd IVF attempt was "free" b/c of the two prior failures.

Besides the different protocol suggested, my second clinic also insisted I do another trial xfer b/c he found my cervix to be "difficult" for a xfer.  When I went back to the orig. clinic and asked, it turns out that my file had me listed as "easy xfer" but on the second trial they agreed I was not an easy xfer and made specific instructions for aid in the real xfer.  Also, my second clinic suggested I have a saline sonogram since I hadn't had one ever before.  They didn't find anything wrong but I did bleed a lot afterwards and I think that may have "cleaned me out" for the third IVF.  I was concerned, at first, b/c I was only supposed to have spotting but it was like a full dark AF.  I really think somehow getting all that out helped w/ implantation.  I don't know for sure but I really feel those two things contributed.  Something made one embryo stick around the third time!!

Good luck and I hope to see you over here permanantly real soon!!

  • We tried 5 IVFs, all failed.  For our final....we used a new uterus!  Wink

I know it got really hard to keep going, especially when we got to our 3rd.  Our RE would do the different tests, tried different facilities, different med combos, etc.  We are very thouroughly unexplained.  She still doesn't know why it would work on our 1st attempt with our surrogate, and never me.  Oh well.  What kept me going was just the thought that I really wanted to be a mom and DH really wanted to be a dad.  No words on how we did it, we just did.  I guess, for me, I was willing to try some very different things and just kept my eye of the prize.....no real great advice, just wishing you the best of luck and the strength to keep trying!

  • multiple IVFs are HARD! to be honest, I was simply "going through the motions with IVF #4." all the shots, bw, u/s became a part of my everyday life.

    here is my "secret recipe."

  • ladies - thanks for sharing your stories, I'll be moving on to IVF# 2 soon(also had a FET) and the prospect is daunting.  I'm scared for more failure and/or losses and it helps to hear that many of you were just as disillusioned and here you are!

I hope and pray that I can join you soon.

  • Thank you - you all give me hope to keep going!  Thanks for sharing your stories.
  • I had 3 failed fresh cycles and my success came with FET #1. I believe 2 things made the difference:

    1. Thawing my 3 day embies and growing them out to blast. We tx two blasts - one hatched and one with assisted hatching.

    2. FET suited my body better than all the meds and stress of a fresh. All I took was progesterone, estrace and steroids.

Honestly, IVF #3s BFN was the worst for me - I felt the weight of all 3 failed cycles crashing down around me; however, I knew I had fight left in me to keep on going. My plan was to try my FET and hope for the best - I had a really good feeling about it. If that had failed, my plan was to do consults with CCRM and/or SIRM and throw everything I had into it - genetic testing etc...Thankfully, my FET was my miracle!

Wishing you all the best - may #3 be your miracle!

  • Here are all the things I can think of that we did different for IVF #3

    1. Added menopur to my drug regiment along with gonal-f.

    2. Followed the antagonist protocol instead of long lupron.

    3. Had an intralipid IV to decrease natural killer cells and help with implantation.

    4. Went on Lupron Depotfor 2 months prior to IVF to shrink my endometriosis lesions.

    5. Went to my clinic's more experienced lab.

    6. Spoke to our priest about our troubles, he said a prayer with us.

    7. Participated in yoga for fertility for 5 weeks prior to IVF.

    8. Had accupuncture on a regular basis, 3 sessions prior to ER one after ET.

    9. Took lovenonx for my blood clotting issue (factor II prothombin gene mutation) .

    10. Put back more than 2 embies, which we had done for the previous 2 tries.

I wish you the best of luck!

  • We switched to the microdose lupron flare protocol.  The first one we did lupron long and our quality was not that good, second one we converted to iui b/c of a dominant follicle.  It was probably going to be our last attempt since we were 100% oop, weren't sure what we were going to do next.  I really tried to focus on letting all of the sadness and stress go.  I saw a therapist for a few sessions and she suggested guided meditation (never tried this before) but it seemed to make me relax.  I wish you the best of luck!!

  • for my 2nd ivf I did microdose lupron, a five day transfer (I did 3 day for my 1st ivf) and I ate pinapple core like crazy and skipped the actupunture the 2nd time around.  I really think waiting to day 5 helped and maybe the pinapple core.  Good luck and hang in there I know it's hard.

  • We had 2 failed IVF's and 1 failed FET before attempting FET# 2- I am now almost 5 weeks.  Like a pp my body handled the FETbetter - what finally worked was staying in estrace after the transfer.  Besides that I reacted better to the IVF when I added acupuncture, herbs and some vitamins along with with the acu treatments.  I also reduced my activity, walking only, though with this FET I have not moved since day 1 of the vivelle patches/estrace.
  • I'm late here, but wanted to chime in...

We switched docs, tried a new protocol (antagonist), added ICSI and Assisted Hatching, and were able to push it to a 5dt instead of a 3dt. All of these elements played a big role in our success I think.
