We've been feeding Cal avocado for 3 days (his first solid) and it has gone well. However, he had a major poop explosion in the middle of the night last night (hasn't happened in months) and has a red rash around his anus today. I know these can be signs of a reaction.
So, to err on the side of caution, I think we'll discontinue avocado for the time being. Every source says to introduce solids slowly - only 1 new food per 4-7 days. So, my questions is: if you think there was a reaction 3 days into a food and you discontinue it, can you move right on to the next on the list, or should you take a short break from solids altogether...?
Pedi's office is closed now or I'd call. Just wondering if we should feed him any solids tonight.

Re: Need input from moms on solids dilemma (please)!
Jack's butt was ON FIRE from Earth's Best organic sweet potato. It was awful and has taken a week to get rid of the rash.
Here's my suggestion - when introducing a new food - feed it maybe 2 days in a row - and then wait. So - you're doing the one new food every 4 days - but not feeding the SAME food 4 days in a row. I think that's what can set them off - they kind of get overloaded.
And - avocado has lots of oils and fats - hence - the poop-splosion (and also because you just introduced food and his little GI system is saying "oh my! I gotta figure out how to digest this shizz!")
I would not feed him any solids tonight. Let his butt heal. Or - rice cereal is a pretty safe one to fall back on whenever they have a diaper rash reaction to something and or loose poop - the rice is so mild and also can help put a stop to loose poops.

I would think it's just his body reacting to the new food, not necessarily an allergy, just new processing. I'd try it for another day and if the tush isn't looking better try something new the next day.

I agree with both pps. E had a gastric reaction to EVERY new food at first but eventually he was fine. my pedi suggested thew same as LucyP, try a food for 2-3 days and then take a few days off, as over exposure can cause a reaction, too.
And it is more likely to be that his gut was shocked at this new food to process, than a true allergy. It could be an allergy, but it is super rare with the first foods. They are the first foods because allergy is so rare!

thanks so much everyone! i wrote this right before i left work and didn't get to read responses until now, so i called my sister on my way home and she suggested waiting until the rash has cleared before introducing the next food. this made sense to me, so that's what we did. it doesn't seem like an allergic reaction or he'd be in much worse shape, but as others said, maybe just his body getting used to processing a new food.
