So, I have been pumping 8oz every 3-4hrs since the 2nd week my LO was born..He is in the NICU so we were just freezing it. We have been trying to reduce my supply FOREVER...I dropped from 15 minute sessions to 10 minutes now it take like 5min to pump 4oz per side. Now, that LO will be coming home soon I have been BFing once a day at the NICU he only eats like 47 mils so 1 and a quarter Oz every 3 hrs. I have tried to pump 3 oz per session and its freaking killing me. I get so engorged it is painful. I have tried to strech out sessions too. Please give any advice. There is no earthly reason to produce so much milk for one baby and IT HURTS TIA
Re: Need help reducing supply PLEASE!!!
it will chill out in time. it is not an overnight thing. keep freezing the milk. because his appetite will greatly increase. my DD was drinking 45 oz from month 4 until 8. and that is with eating solids as well.
if you really want to decrease your supply without killing it. look into taking sage. sage tea in particular. you buy loose sage leaves and seep it in water and drink three times a day. you can also make sage muffins/bread.
however i really would just freeze the milk.
The LC ladies at the hospital keep telling me about hind milk foremilk issues with my oversupply and BF...
Do you think I should TRY and pump first and then feed him?
read up on www.kellymom.com about oversupply. you might have to do block feedings. this is when you feed off one breast for, say 4 hours at a time to insure baby gets to hindmilk, this will also tell your breasts to slow down production.
if you pump before feedings you're still telling boobs to make more (body replaces what is taken)
good luck and congrats on baby coming home!
peppermint tea is also good for reducing supply.
