I take a lot of pictures but am not a professional or even a hard-core hobbyist. My biggest piece of advice that I give to others is to take a LOT of pictures. If you take 50 photos, probably 10 will be pretty good and 1 or 2 will be fantastic. If you take 10 photos, you might get one good shot.
Lots of photos increases your chances of a great picture. And with digital, you just delete the bad pictures. No money wasted on excessive photo-taking.
My advice is BACK IT ALL UP. Burn it to discs, save your favorite online somewhere. Make copies to DH's computer and back to yours every couple weeks/months. Get an external hard drive. Something. Anything. Don't let your precious pictures die when your computer does one day. You usually can't get them back =(

Ditto this x1000. I back up every week to an external hard drive and make copies onto DVDs and have started storing those in a fireproof safe. I lost a lot of images when my computer crashed a few years ago from when DH and I first started dating. And as much as I miss those photos, I'd be in agony if I lost any of Will's baby pictures!
There are even places online where you can back up for pretty cheap every month. I haven't looked into it, but it's an option if you don't want to have DVDs or an external hard drive laying around.

Our computer crashed at the beginning of this year and we lost thousands of photos. Our wedding (we have our pro pics on CD but had a bunch of our own and our family's pictures). Our honeymoon - every single picture we had from our honeymoon is gone. Our trip to Ruidoso - some of my fave pics ever! The first 3 houses we lived in. Our nieces/nephews. The twins. My Pre-PG figure taken the day we got our BFP (*sobs*). Everything is gone.
Re: Hey..NON-Photogs re: taking photos of your DC
There are some good suggestions in the article.
