Indiana Babies

labor. holy hell.

I'll probably write a longer birth story later but just had to get this out there. Holy crap, labor is hard! I had no idea how much it would hurt. I was told by several doctors that they very rarely see a woman make it med-free as far as I did with my kind of pain/lack of progress. Not trying to toot my own horn at ALL, but it gives me a little perspective on what was actually happening.

Turns out, I actually lost a TON of blood - I had some pretty bad clotting and the next day heard the word "hemorrhage" for the first time. The doctor said it's still possible I'd need a transfusion if it doesn't get better. All I know is that the medical professionals did a GREAT job of protecting me from that kind of "news" because I had no idea how serious it was until after the fact. Sheesh.

The one very comforting thing that has prevented me from being overwhelmed emotionally with how my labor & delivery turned out is that if I can do it and live through it successfully, any woman can. It has actually been very empowering and I feel like superwoman at moments. I don't know if that even makes sense, but what I do know is that I nver really would have described myself as a strong woman until now.

Oh, and a side note for mamas-to-be. Be prepared to fall in love with your husband in an entirely new way. I'm crying right now as I type that because he has just been so incredibly amazing.

:)

  • Oh, Lauren...I know what you mean about the falling in love thing.  It's great, isn't it?

So, how are you feeling now?  That is really scary about the hemorrhage.  When do you get to go home?

  • hey Lauren - I just wanted to say Congratulations!  I just checked here since you first posted, but I thought I'd post here rather than your other post.  :)

And as for your last line, you're so right!  I was shocked to watch MH, who had never held a baby before Jackson, do so much for the both of us and be so gentle and sweet - esp with me having a c/s he had to do a LOT!

Congrats again - Ella is beautiful!

  • med-free...any woman who even attempts med free is crazy brave in my book!!  great job momma.

I do think it's amazing to see how well the husbands react in this situations and it reminds you, yet again, that you're so lucky!  Just wait until you watch Ella smile at Brian for the first time :-)

I hope you don't need a transfusion.  That's scary :(   They gave me something for blood loss during delivery  - a suppository I think?? - but that could be perfectly normal. I have no idea.

congrats again! can't wait to see more pics - what a beautiful baby girl.

  • I'm crying just thinking about it!

I'm so impressed by the med-free thing and I'm glad to hear that the pros did such a wonderful job of not freaking you out and keeping you calm.  Glad things went so well, though not exactly as you planned.

I just got back on the Nest this morning after a self-imposed hiatus and was so excited to see pictures of Ella!!  She's absolutely freaking adorable, though I knew she would be.  Smile

  • Yep, I had a suppository. The doctor kept apologizing for having to shove pills up my butt, but I was still numb from the spinal so did not care at ALL.

We're going home tomorrow! I've had a fantastic experience in this hospital and have been very impressed with almost everyone we've met here as far as how open they are to how we want things handled. We've only had one nurse who was a little weird - I'm pretty sure she "accidentally" tried to give me oxycontin so she could steal it for herself. Long story.

So, fantastic hospital experience and somehow a little sad to be leaving with all the help we've had. But, SO excited to introduce Ella to Sophie and all the fun toys she has waiting for her at home!

  • Lauren, you are one strong mamma!

With regards to what you said with falling in love with your husband on a whole other level, I wanted to tell you that I love the way Brian described you on your blog, and his labels for the pictures. ?It is obvious that he felt the same way about seeing you as a mom as you do about seeing him as a dad. ?It's so special! :)

I hope you continue to recover quickly (without a transfusion) and of course I can't wait to see more pictures and read the longer version of the birth story when you get around to it!?

  • Awwww, your line about the husbands made me tear up.  I can't wait to see Shawn as a daddy!

It sounds like you have all the right in the world to be proud of yourself!  I'm glad to hear that you feel so strong.  I'm looking forward to hearing the whole birth story once you guys get home and settled.  Best of luck taking her home.  It will be great!

  • Lauren - I just wanted to say congratulations again!  You are such an amazing and strong woman!  And the last line you wrote about Brian totally made me tear up.  :)

  • Lauren, you are so amazing ... I can't believe you went that long w/o meds.

And I would like to iterate everything Jocelyn said .... Brian's love and admiration for you was truly transparent in his words.  That blog post made me cry.

... your post makes me fear & anticipate labor more, at the same time :)

  • Congrats!!!  I can't imagine going through all of that med-free.  I have such admiration for those women who are brave enough to do it!  Kudos to you!!! I think it's fantastic!  Although, I do hope that you don't have to have a transfusion and can make a speedy recovery!

Like the other girls said, your note about dads made me tear up.  Believe me, it keeps happening as your baby (and husband) reach new milestones.  It's a beautiful thing!

    Congrats again!!

  • Congratulations, Lauren! I can't imagine going that long med free. Hope you have a fast speedy recovery. My c/s recovery was actually pretty easy and not that bad at all.
  • It's good to hear from you! That is scary about the bleeding, but it sounds like they're keeping a close eye on you and that you're in good hands (three cheers for awesome bedside manner, right?)
